Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

GuitarDoc and others,
That is what I use in my SG 61-re-issue. C/59 H in the bridge and a Jazz bridge in the neck. I thought it might pair a touch better, output wise but still be a Jazz, just a touch louder. I have had no problem with boominess at all.
I use the 59/C bridge double parchment uncovered and use the Jazzb neck with a nickel cover, turned 180. They are fabulous live and as a condo guitar through my Princeton Reverb. I am still amazed how well that Hybrid can do anything.
I have the Hybrid in 2 other guitars. Various neck p'up's and all work well. Even a single coil Twangbanger in the neck works wonders together, very Hendrix like.

blueman335,
Yes, using stock mag. I have thought about an RCA5 or (from all I've read lately) an UOA5. It sounds good as is, so I haven't tried it but I have thought of it. I believe it is a polished A5 in there now, and as it is powerful and does clean up nice, I might take a lot of time and found out it might not clean up as much.
I really don't know and would be curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. You have been around a long time, know much more than I do, so your opinions or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Steve... I have used the Twangbanger in the neck with a Humbucker in the bridge as well... great combination!

BachToRock,
In your 59/Jazz Hybrid, did you keep the polished A5 mag?

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

I just put another 59/C in one of my latest builds. Initially I was debating whether to put an A2 or A4 in it but I ended up putting a UOA5 in it and it sounds so good I can't imagine that I would ever consider any other magnet.

+1. UOA5 in a '59/Custom is an ideal match. In fact they're a great magnet for a lot of hybrids. There's a lot going on sonically with the contributions from mismatched coils, the sharp high-end they produce, & a warm unoriented sandcast magnet. Good stuff.

UOA5 has become my magnet of choice. It's great for warming up an A5 bridge PU or adding a little high-end bite to an A2 neck. As far as I know, I was the first member to get them from Addiction FX when he arrived here years ago, and promptly put one in a C5 in an LP. I was impressed. I've since replaced most of my A8's with UOA5's.

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

I admit that you initially turned me on to them and now I have many pups (SD of course) with UOA5. It's a great mediator for the A2 - A5 choice/dilemma.

And my undying thanks to Bach to Rock for his work on hybrids. I now have so many that I can't keep track of them. My latest was a very interesting experiment. I really dislike Epi pups (their new pro buckers are an exception to that), but just for the heck of it I combined the screw coil of a 14k Epi Classic bridge pup with the screw coil of a Gibson BBP and a UOA5 mag. I cut the screws off of the BBP even with the bottom plate when the screws are turned all the way in, flush with the top of the bobbin. That coil is acting as a brighter slug coil. I put it in the bridge of one of my HSH builds. It's amazing how good it sounds as a bridge pup...very bright and Stratty sounding. Gets lots of "quack" in position #2, even in series humbucker mode, but especially split.

So:
Seems like the UOA5 has been getting more appreciation for swaps than the RC A5, as in Hybrids and 59's, etc. Compared to an A4, which I like very much, in a Seth Lover, which I ordered with a RC A5, how would aUOA5 sound in comparison? less power in general, yes? But would the UOA5 be more powerful, or sound a little louder than the A4? The RC A5 will be new to me, as I ordered it from all the good press it gets here. And here is where I trust all things pickups.

RC A5's are a subtle change from a polished A5, basically a little smoother high end. You can hear a difference but it's nothing drastic. Zhang (and I) like them on bridge PU's to take off any excess treble or harshness. UOA5's have a completely different EQ & a looser feel, similar to an A2. I've been using a lot of UOA5's and A2's in the last few years, choosing A2's when I want warmth and a lot of mids, and choosing an UOA5 when I want an A2 sound with a bit more treble.

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

I dig a RC A5, and use one in my Custom Shop double scew 59/Custom Hybrid. Certainly a smoother high end, which makes the Hybrid perfect for me.

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

Yes, I agree with Blueman. The RC A5 will soften the highs very slightly. But the unoriented charges in the UOA5 make a much bigger difference tending more toward A2 tonal territory (as I understand, the A2 is also unoriented) but with a bit more attack and output than the A2. Kind of a middle ground between A2 and A5...soft and smooth similar to an A2, more output and attack similar to an A5.

The 59/Jazz hybrid.

Can they not make that neck for order from the custom shop?

I have a Carvin California carve top. Mahogany neck/body set neck and ebony finger board. I have a 59/custom hybrid on order from a local music shop. It seems this jazz hybrid is good bet for a matching neck.
Since it’s not a stock neck I assume they could make this if asked?

What exactly would I request? A jazz/59 hybrid? A 59/jazz hybrid?

Thanks, Jim

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

Hybrids are an option under Build Your Own Pickup. Just ask them for a 59/Jazz to match your production 59/Custom.

Is it the looks of the Sentient that's causing you to blow extra on a CS pickup?

Even though the verbatim hints the Sentient to be a '59/Jazz hybrid, it actually is not.

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

I never said (nor thought) it was, though it may very well be (or do you have first-hand knowledge?). Since you brought it up, let's have a look at the actual "verbatim":

Description
The Sentient neck delivers a balanced, versatile tone that fits right between the ’59 model and the Jazz neck pickup. You’ll get pristine cleans for intricate chordal and single note runs with fluid leads under high gain. The Sentient is a vintage output pickup with great dynamic response and a wide harmonic range. It works great for low tunings in all humbucker-equipped guitars.

I imagine those seeking a 59/Jazz hybrid are interested in the above description more than the actual hybrid which they have probably never heard.

Re: Best Neck Pickup to Pair With 59/Custom

Wow, I don't believe how I didn't see that combo staring me directly in the face. Now that I think about it though, the Sentient and 59/C would make darn near the perfect match. I know what I'm trying on my next superstrat.
