Noise gates are not really tone suckers, but they all destroy dynamics and sustain. Can't imagine why people use them. Any benefit they give, can be obtained by correct left & right hand, string damping, turning down the gain, and proper use of the volume knob.

My Boss AC-2 is very very noisy. I don't think there's any amount of muting that will kill it. I'm not searching for a noise gate/surpressor. I'm quite intrigued by the NS-2, Hush and Smartgate. Comments on the last two? Or should I go for the "tried and tested" NS-2?

If my Boss BF-2 flanger is on when I stop playing, I use the device pictured above to turn off the flanger, thereby eliminating the noise.

Other than that, I just make sure my guitars' wiring is in good shape, cables are solid, use good pedals, don't run a ridiculous amount of gain, and be careful where the noise-generators are in relation to the gain. I don't need no steenkeeng noise gate.

The best noise gate is, and will always be, no noise gate at all. I prefer to find the source of the noise and deal with it there. A noise gate should be an absolute last resort.

When the noise is an Angry JCM800 being pushed to the limits by an OD box of sorts, one needs to put a gate between them, or you end up in feedback hell.

I've been there. Now I have a Smart Gate...

Bumping this for Lu_B who asked much the same question.....

I have a sneaky feeling that the players who have bad experiences with Noise Reduction have the settings rather higher than is ideal. That is the joy of [HUSH - THE PEDAL] - two settings to suit rather than one size fits all (it never does).

Gotta tell ya, the best noise gate that I've ever used was a Rockman. Tom Scholz had the right ideas, just commercialized it too early, if you ask me. I've never had much use for them, though...

These 2 have it 100% correct. Volume Knob, and if you got something leaking through, find the source, and if you can't fix it, than I guess get one. My V-Amp 2 (Amp Processor) has a noise gate, and I use that whole pedal for record, and it sounds amazing.
