im gonna get one and need some input, i know nothing about whats good or bad. i tend to use moderate to high gain, play solos and the music stops and starts sometimes.

Re: Best noise gate?

The best noise gate is no noise gate at all...Gates by and large SUCK and often kill a lot of the players dymanics...

That said if you have to get one a HUSH unit is what I'd get, and FWIW, it's what I used when I used a gate...

Re: Best noise gate?

The ISP decimator rules supreme . . . better than boss or the Hush as well.
Youtube it and listen for yourself.

Re: Best noise gate?

If you get a rackmout hush you´ll want to try and get an older one with the red logo if cou can, they´re slightly more transparent than the newer ones, both open and closed. The new ones are fine, the old ones are just a bit better.

I just missed one in near mint condition on eBay this evening, but it was out of my range anyway at 80 bucks IIRC...

What I used to use was an Alesis 3630 at the last point in the chain just before my Microverb. I really liked the independent gates for the left and right channels becasue I like to have a slightly different tone left and right. And having a limiter proved to be practical on occasion as well, canßt say I really used the compressor much. The Microverb was there to set some light reverb to compensate for room size as well as mask the closing of the gate. But that´s not because it was in any way "obvious" when it closed, but merely the way I prefer to roll when I have to use a gate.

I have to agree that working without one is preferable if at all possible. Back then with my rack it wasn´t.

Can´t comment on the ISP, MXR or Boss products because I have a big problem trusting something that can be kicked around or randomly stomped on by a stage diver doing such an important job. But I have an aversion to pedals in general save my V-Twin, so YMMV.

Re: Best noise gate?

I second the decimator, great unit, and real easy to use while sounding awesome

Re: Best noise gate?

BLAH BLAH BLAH ISP RULES BLAH BLAH BLAH.

for an effective noise reduction, try a freaking HUSH pedal, and use it right. I'm so tired of Rocktron getting put down because ISP is "better". Well yes, it costs up to 4x as much too, and only does a slightly better job. It also depends on what KIND of noise you're trying to get rid of. Noise floor? use a threshold. An annoying pick up buzz? use a gate.

Have a laugh with it.

Re: Best noise gate?

i've had most of the popular ones on the market...the boss NS-2, MXR smart gate (still have) and the ISP Decimator (still have) and by far the best is the ISP followed by the MXR then way in back sucking tone and just sucking in general is the NS-2.

Re: Best noise gate?

I think I'm going to pick up a decimator. The standard one since I plan on buying a pedal tuner too but ya know, I'm not made ot of money.

Re: Best noise gate?

I think unless there is a lot of stop start stuff during songs then a mute is better (like a tuner with a mute or an a/b box with nothing on one side). As you can control it and it doesn't effect your signal when you play. That said I put up with alot of noise I have a couple of old (not NOS) 12ax7 that are pretty noisy (you notice it when all flanger hit that bottom end of the sweep or when I used gain) I also use single coils which doesn't help for hum.

Re: Best noise gate?

FWIW putting Blackouts in my guitar made a HUGE difference with the noise levels.
Simply blows any passive pickup out of the water for quietness.
If you can find one used, a Boss NS-2 is good. Yes it steals a bit of sustain, but for the price it's great and plenty of pro level metal bands use one.

Re: Best noise gate?

Get an ISP... Its the only one I have ever used and the only one I will ever use. I have a mesa tremoverb and use it with the gain almost dimed and without the isp it is a hissing monster. With the isp i can put the guitar on the stand at full vol and not hear a thing. no tone sucking at all and the gate opens as soon as i hit the strings. So BLA BLA BLA I dont know if isp is the best but ill never need another BLA BLA BLA...

Re: Best noise gate?

I'm with Fire-Guy, the best gate is not gate. I finally repalced all my sinlge coils with vintage Stacks - that took care of the hum. The only pedal I have that's noisy is my old Boss BF-2, so when the music stops, I turn it off.

Re: Best noise gate?

I used a Boss NS-2 and it sucked. Didn't really do anything. All together I said screw it and just dried up my tone and worked on my technique. Now I just barely use gain for rhythm (just enough to chug) and then throw a tad more on for leads then just used my MXR 10 band to give my tone more balls since there's less saturation.

I must say though, after retubing everything on my amp the whole uncontrolled feedback, hum, and what not all sorta disappeared. I can dime all my gain and I don't get any issues anymore so don't overlook microphonic tubes if its a tube amp.
