Please name more tunes that you think of as references for clean tones.

Tom Sholtz gets some great cleans...I always did like the Rockman for that at least. Very nice...there were 2 settings one was like a BF or a Marshall clean kinda "small"..the other was like a Tweed or JC sound..fuller/bigger

Romantics-Talkin in Your Sleep' great cleans..

Yes-Owner of a lonely heart.

That one Gloria Estefan song...On your feet maybe? dude gets some great squeaky clean strat "quack"

God..did I just admit I know a Gloria Estefan song? :smash:

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World (the entire album). Gorgeous Fender-y cleans throughout.

Van Halen - Finish What You Started

And pretty much everything from the first two albums by The Police. Andy Summers = my hero.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Velvet Underground - Heroin

JImi Hendrix - Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)

The Beatles - In My Life (particularly the intro) probably my fav

The Who - The Kids Are Alright, Pictures Of Lily (many more haha)

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Good list of amps here but if you like the Rolland jc 120 here's 2 more superb amps to check out-

Lab series L7
Yamaha G212 or 112

I've always dobuled tube crunc sounds with clean sounds and these amps (along with the rolland) are superb for this use- Very fast, very clean and relatively thin- They thicken up nicely with chorus-

When running them paralel with tube amps the sound variety is incredible- With very little tube you can get a thin cars like sound, add a little more tube and you start to get beatle or tom petty sounds-

A little more tube and you start getting somethign like an overdriven twin but with much better transisnts-

And tube and SS full up gives a wonderful Rush or trever R feal with tons of flexibility at the toes-

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Gotta second the votes for the AC30 and Roland Jazz Chorus. I may have cried the first time I played through each of these.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

I'm not saying this is the "best" clean amp, but the old ('00 or so) Vox Cambridge amps have a very good clean channel for such a cheap amp.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Old HiWatt's in general
Old Ampeg's in general
Vox AC-30
100 watt Plexi
Roland Jazz Chorus

BUT I must say that my favorite non Fender clean tone come from a Selmer Zodaic! Not to mention that next to a Magnatone that have the coolest tremolo ever!

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

The Roland Jazz Chorus is a pretty cool clean amp...Joni Mitchell says they were invented by Roland specifically for her. The Polytones that the jazz players use are nice too.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

+1 for the Mesa Blue Angel
I actually like Marshall cleans
Matchless is absolutely beautiful clean.......

BUT... The Hiwatt DR504 is the definition of clean. Throw in some KT88s & it's HUGE clean!!!!

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

My first vote is for my Holland Little Jimi, however, Mike Holland is out - of - business and the replacement company (Run by Lane from Heritage guitar) is not as clean.

My second vote is for either an AMPEG V-4 or VT-22, which are basically the same amps with different cabinets.

My third vote is for that solid stage Rolnad JC-120, but then again it's solid state and a lot of pedals really suck with this particular amp.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

it's a shame really, that it's actually really difficult to find a decent 50w and up tube amp that is 1 channel w/ reverb for under 700 new these days. You'd think that by settling for fewer features that you would be able to save quite some bucks on an amp.

Re: Best Non-Fender Clean Amp

Vox AC-30 - listen to U2
Matchless Chieftain (pretty much any Matchless) - listen to the Refreshments
Any of the Hiwatt DR series

this is a great clean amp-heavy as hell but very cool. A jazz guitar into this amp sounds very good.
hey toad, in response to your question you posted the other day about great inexpensive amps with good cleans and good distortion I played a Boogie F 30 today with several different guitars and I have to say it sounded realy good both the cleans and distortion. you should check out this amp if you want both from an amp and the tubes are EL84 so you will get good clip and gain from the distortion and cleans are nice and punchy.
good luck and try plugging it into a 2/12 cab or 4/12 half stack to hear what it can realy do. The combo is nice but more speakers make it sound that much better.
