can you cast some LIGHT on my choice please?
i need a pedal that is Sweet, smooth, velvety and has a tight bottom end, and good mids. nothing more, nothing less... cause i want to boost the 5150 Lead channel. to tight it a bit, crunchy its mids and smooth its highs.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

See if you can find a boss FZ-2 or a BD-2 somewhere . . . these pedals have loads of boost in them (especially the FZ-2).

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

A/C or R/C boosters, the A/C has a little more gain on tap.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

You can use either a clean boost or an OD pedal. Common OD boosters include:

Boss SD1 and OD2, as well as BD2
Ibanez TS9 and 808 and their Maxon equivalents
Digitech Bad Monkey

Clean boosts would be:
MXR Microamp
and to a certain extent the SD Pickup booster (which I found to be a VERY transparent and GREAT boost in front of an amp. For the price, I'd say it's the best out there)

If you want cheap, a SD1 would do, you can mod it easily. If you want the old school way, a TS9. The Pickup booster has more nifty features and sounds great too.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

I like the simple Boss SD-1. Every other pedal just seems to "F" it up with honk/screech or unnatural compression.

Way back in the day, I had a few choices among my fellow guitar amigos. These were the DOD 250, the Tube Screamer with the small chrome button, the SD-1, the EH
Muff Fuzz and Big Muff. For no other reason other than chance, the MXR was not involved.

Of the choices I had at hand, The Boss SD-1 had the most natural/accesible overdrive tone. The EH products were way too compressed. I did not click with the chrome button Tube Screamer, but the SD-1 was eventually the tone that is part of what I consider "my sound" when used to goose a tube amp.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

The SD1 I have sounds very... lifeless. It's not very transparent either. For the price it's hard to fault, but it's far from a great OD or clean boost I think. It does sound good though. It's just not very tube like so many players like. But it suits me.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

Thank´s Guys
i went from a guitar shop this afternoon and i tested the ts9, and the TS808 pro.. the pro, is thicker, and heavy, the ts9 is more Bright...
but i couldn´t play it in my amp, i´ll see if the guys can lend me the pedals.. to bring em to my house and play it.
30 minutes on the 5150

i didn´t understand that ac rc stuff.
also, i don´t know the difference between a clean boost and an overdrive boost
what it will change in sound!?

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

The brand is Xotic i believe. Those are the models.

An overdrive adds gain. A clean boost pushes the preamp further.

A clean boost is like having a more powerful pickup. An overdrive is like... another preamp, more transparent, that adds gain and color to the sound of the preamp. But usually when setup for clean boost (i.e drive all the way down, level all up) they're fairly transparent too.

Hum, Thank´s Pierre
i´ll get the Overdrive boost. it will do what i want better.
gonna test that damned TS808

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

i'm using 2 in the mean time, depending on the (Peavey XXL) channel i'm using:

*TS808 for drive boost on my CRUNCH setting

*MXR Micro Amp for clean boost on my Ultra/ High gain

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

I don't think you want a clean boost, because the 5150 has more than enough gain on tap. You could just turn the gain up on the amp. It seems to me you want that textured mix of the 5150 preamp gain a little lower, but fed with a pedal that introduces it's own grit. I normally don't recomend this one, but a Japanese, or Keely modded DS-1 could be perfect if you're a gainaholic. If you like saturated tones, then that's the Vai recipe, to use the amp mid level and a "real" DS-1 in front, rather than an SD or TS. It should be said with the Boss stuff that Japanese or Keely modded is the "good stuff" while the new Taiwan boxes are good, but more of a "big guitar store impulse items" these days.
