best oil for oil finish

Re: best oil for oil finish

I don't know if it's the 'best' but I have an old Japanese Strat that myself and a friend finished in Linseed Oil and then put a wax finish over the top.

We did it about 7 or 8 years ago and it's holding up just fine :)

Re: best oil for oil finish

Instead of using one of the "inferior" finishing oils originally posted, buy a bottle of Birchwood-Casey Tru Oil off eBay.co.uk., you won´t regret it ;)

At Boulder Furniture Arts ( http://www.Boulderfurniturearts.com ) we use Old Masters Tung Oil/Varnish. Dries hard, feels great and it's easy to apply. http://www.oldmastrs.com/products/woodcare.html

I sand the wood with at least 220...sometimes finer. But I get the wood perfect and then apply the first coat of Tung Oil/Varnish.

I let it sit for 20 minutes - just until the finish starts to thicken.

Then I wipe it down nice and smooth and let it dry.

Then I repeat 2 or 3 more times.

We finish all of out furniture with Old Masters.

Howdy,

I used Minwax Tung Oil finish on my flamed Mahogany Tele 7 years ago. It's really a wipe on varnish. As mentioned earlier, I applied about 4 coats, the first coat rather thick, I confess! I'm satisfied, but I'm no expert.

I am also UK based.
I have used two different oils, and recommend them both depending on the tickness of finish you want.

The first is Birchwood Casey Tru-oil, which, as has been said, you can get from lots of sellers on ebay.co.uk

But another brand that hasnt yet been mentioned and is UK based is Liberon.
They make some excellent stuff. I have used Liberon Finishing Oil after it being recommended by a luthier and it works fantastically. It leaves the wood feeling more raw and natural than Tru-oil, but stil offers protection.
Here is a link:

They also do a pure Tung oil and various other oils.

The Luthier who de-fretted my bass used danish oil, which is apparently what Ibanez use on their unfinished necks.
Seems good so far
