trying to get close to an eric johnson type tone with my traynor, but i can't spend $300 on a chandler tube overdrive. i like that fluid, clean distortion sound that he has and want to emulate it just for some stuff. i'm not looking to be a little eric johnson or anything.

i've tried using low distortions and overdriven cleans, but i can't get the volume or pick response that i can apparently get with an overdrive pedal. any suggestions?

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Eric Johnson has been using a Fuzzface recently... he also used to use an Ibanez Tube Screamer....

As far as under a $100.00, you could get a Danelectro Daddy O. pedal to get that fluid clear distortion... or use a Boss Overdrive, Blues Driver, or get the Fab Tone to get a rougher sound...

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

i've heard great things about those ibanez tube screamers. what does it do exactly and how does it affect the sound? what are the typical setups with a tube screamer?

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Tubescreamers add a kind of nasally upper midrange hump to the sound plus a very smooth OD sound. When it hits an already distorted amp, it sounds a little more cutting unless you tone it down with the tone knob. They can be really good or really bad depending on what you are looking for. I'd suggest checking out the Bad Monkey or Tubulator pedals if you are interested in a tubescreamer because they can be had much cheaper and are quite good for the money they cost.

I like the BD-2 for very touch sensitive gain . . . the next time you go to the music store just give a bunch of OD pedals a whirl . . .

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

I'd look for a used Boss DS-1 or used Ibanez TS-9...Steve Vai uses both of those pedals. I gotta say that Eric Johnson's tone comes from his technique and his Marshall plexi though. Can't over emphasize the importance of either.

i'm starting to get the feel for his light picking style and when/when not to use pull-offs and hammer-on's, but i can't get that fluid tone yet. my amps gain is too distorted, and doesn't have a good response at low settings.

his playing style is interesting though. he seems to use hammer-ons/pull-offs just at the right places to make his picked runs sound fast and smooth. they're kind of pivotal. he also works horizontally across the fretboard in an intersting way such as not to get stuck in scale patterns. man, i've learned a lot from picking up some ej tablature.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

It seems like what you're looking for is an OD which doesn't add much compression. It's easier to find that spot on an amp- the problem is volume; but the way it works with most pedals is that as soon as you engage the pedal it automatically squashes your dynamics, regardless of how much gain you have dialed in.

With a $100 budget, I'm not sure how many pedals you're going to be narrowing down to and still getting what you want out of it. I sure as hell would not want to spend any money on a Chandler Tube Driver. The pedal I've been the happiest with is a Barber Direct Drive. It's a little out of your budget (I think around $112), but I believe it's a great pedal. The new ones have the LED placed in a better spot and have more low-end response- which is a little lacking in mine.

The best advice I can give you is to ignore all the intArweb hype regarding pedals, don't expect a pedal to do what it cannot do (sound "just like" a "Marshall in a box"), try as many as you can get your hands on and figure out what works within the context of what you're looking for, and not what people think you're looking for. There's plenty of people that think the Ibanez Tube Screamer is the cat's pajamas- for a reference on that sound- think Stevie Ray Vaughn. I hate his tone, I hate how compressed everything sounds. I remember getting my hands on a few different TS-9 and TS-10 pedals and being confused and disappointed- "everybody loves these things- but they SUCK." Remember that other people may be looking for something entirely different- regardless of how well you try to explain yourself.

Aren't things easier when you can "play well with others?"

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

I'd say if you're looking under $100 your best bets are probably the Digitech Bad Monkey, The Boss DS-1/SD-1, and though I've never tried it, the Arion Tubulator. Those pedals all fit your budget and should give you a smoother OD tone and nice sustain if you dial them in with your amp well.

But of course I also agree about trying out lots of different pedals at a guitar store. Personally, I didn't really like the sound of my amp boosted with a TS clone (Maxon OD808). I tried different settings on the pedal and a few more on the amp but I didn't really see the advantage right away. However, it might be because I didn't spend a lot of time dialing it in, so make sure you take time to experiment before you make your final judgment.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

I was at guitar center the other day, and the Boss OD3 overdrive kicks the SHIZ out of a Boss DS1 or SD1 anyway. That thing for $70 bucks is great.

+100 on the Barber DD. A great great little pedal with lots of versatility. Very fluid and singing.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive is a very nice OD pedal. New ones are above $100, but you can find used ones for under $100. It's very similar to a TS-9 (slightly better IMO), and it also has a clean knob which adds more control and versitilty.

thanks for the tip. i'm going to try and get my hands on one of those. i'll also be looking out for the bad monkey and ds-1 just to compare. i have heard good things about direct drive though, so i'm pretty confident that it's going to produce some good sound.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

My first thought was to look at the MI Audio Blues Pro, i think they are about 110 new usually ~ 80 used. The crunch box works pretty well as a "more edgy" overdrive as well. The two of them together, :bigok:

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Get a used Boss SD-1 on eBay...EVH and Lynch are reported to have used them at some point...I hear that the new OD-3 has more mids, but the SD-1 is a "classic sounding" pedal.

I do not care for Tubescreamers of any flavor. I have tried many of them.

I also think the Boss OS-2 is a great pedal for rock--highly underrated--but it's just not as transparent as my Maxon SD-9.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Just my two cents........

A few months ago I wanted to buy yet another distortion pedal to add to my collection......So I went to my local store.....I narrowed it down to three:

1. ProCo Solo
2. EHX Metal Muff
3. Marshall Jackhammer

I ended up taking home the Jackhammer cuz it was the one that best appealed to me at the time...And you know what? It was only $79 Cdn....Well built...Solid metal casing and knobs...........

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

I can put in a vote for the Rocktron Austin Gold($60-80). I think it adds NO compression to the basic tone. The amount of dirt is small, even with the gain at 1 O'clock. It's made more to excite the preamp in your amplifier, and it makes the tone for leads a bit brighter, so no mushing out.
If you set the gain low and level high, it adds no overdrive of it's own, but rather, makes the amp do the work, which usually sounds better anyway. Worth a look, anyway.

Re: best overdrive pedals under $100

Ive had a bad monkey for about 3 years, and it's always been an imortant part of my rig. Very well built too.
