I'm looking for a good low-medium output humbucker to go in a set neck, mahogany body, tosewoid fingerboard guitar. I am between 4. Dimarzio PAF 36 anniversary, dimarzio PAF master, Seymour Duncan custom 5, or EMG retroactive fat 55. I play punk, metal, and classic rock. Any suggestions ?

the duncan and the emg will both have too much power

Re: Best PAF?

Those last two are beyond PAF territory. Out of the two others you listed, I would go for the 36th, but they are way down on my list of favorite PAF types. I like Seth Lovers best in Mahogany bodied guitars.

Re: Best PAF?

I can only speak about that Custom 5, and it is about twice as powerful as a PAF, and not EQ'd the same. It would be better to compare the others to a 59, Seth Lover or Antiquity...that would be a fairer fight.

Re: Best PAF?

None of your choices really say vintage PAF to me. I have used the C5 and the 36th, but swapped both for other things.

Good PAF examples from Duncan are the '59, Seth Lover, Jazz, and Antiquity. DiMarzio is the '59 or maybe the PAF Master (I have some, but have yet to try them).

Something hotter that works for hard rock or metal would be the Screamin Demon', Custom 5, Custom Custom, Jason Becker, RTM, Full Shred, '59/Custom Hybrid and Parallel Axis.

Even hotter would be the JB, RTM, or whatever that new Mustaine JB thing is called.

I suggest a '59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge and the Jazz in the neck.

Re: Best PAF?

The 36'th is a modern take on the original PAF. I wasn't impressed.

If you want a real deal vintage PAF tone, there are quiet a few options in todays aftermarket pickup world, but you absolutely cannot go wrong with a Duncan '59, or Antiquity.

Re: Best PAF?

Slightly off topic, but what was Larry thinking? The DiMarzio PAF was a good pickup, the 36th is awful, but the new '59 is better than the old PAF! Now we have the "PAF Master"?

Anyway, sorry to derail. Carry on

everytime I see the words DiMarzio PAF I am reminded of Paul Gilbert’s tone, which reminds me of a Tesla coil. I also associate DiMarzio with Steve Vai and Satch, while their music is great, both their tones sound like fruit blenders and Vai’s in particular sounds like the speakers are farting out all the time.

Re: Best PAF?

I vote for the SH-1. Oh wait, it isn't there.

How about the Pearly Gates?

No?!?

Before I even opened the thread I was gonna say Pearly Gates. Don't let the A2 magnets fool you, those things can handle heavy stuff and are serious tone machines.

I like the PG better than the PG+ with an A5 mag. I wonder what a PG with an A8 would be like?

Re: Best PAF?

I recently swapped a PG+ A8 into a contemperary Strat HSS. That was what the guitar needed a bit more volume and more growl.

Re: Best PAF?

I'm gonna suggest a post that is called "Punk Rock neck pickup - suggestions...."

Re: Best PAF?

I don't understand a PAF poll that has a Custom 5 and not a Seth. How about going back to the drawing board with choices or giving the thread a better name?

Re: Best PAF?

Because you know what "PAF" really represents, and most don't. I ignored the poll and his first choices to offer suggestions on what might actually suit his taste.
