Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

Fullshred, Custom, and Jazz bridge from what I've tried in the Duncan line. All three work great for deathmetal and a lot else as well.

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

Duncan's: Distortion, Full Shred......that's about it if you really want to go Brootal

Dimarzio's: X2n- amazing for death metal, i have it in two of my RG's and it really hits your amp with the heavy punch needed for death metal.

EVO- great for a more complex sound than the X2n, not as hot but still has an awesome edge to it.

D-sonic- GREAT if you have a very nice amp. it has a beautiful tone but a lot of your power is gunna have to come from your amp/stompboxes, especially if you're playing death metal

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

if you want death metal, x2n, that is THE pickup chuck schuldiner used

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

I bet the Duncan SH-15 that will soon be out might be great for it?

Invaders the way to go, depite some peoples accusations the invader is both articulate and voiceful(with rediculous crunch),you will sound like like _Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Death_METAL...as...#%$@

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

I would try out the SH-15. From what i hear they will be a very high output pickup.

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

Although I think so too won't it be better to actually wait until we hear them before suggest them?

Anyway, from the already known line the Invader is the first to come to mind or the Distortion. I think both can handle drop d tunings.

Re: best passive pickups for death metal?

From Duncan I'd try the Invader, Distortion and Full Shred (with a bassy guitar). The new sh-15 seems promising for that.

From DiMarzio the Steve's Special for sure (I had that pickup in my RG and I remember getting leathal palm mutes through an old marshall valvestate which is not the best rig for big low end). The Evo is for more technical, progressive stuff I guess, but it could work for DM too. Not so surprisingly the Air Zone has a FAT tone that fits in DM perfectly. If you have a high gain amp it's at its best. I was able to get great "In Flames" tones out of that.

If you decide to go for more money, Bare Knuckle has the Warpig (either ceramic or alnico). That pickup should just be named "Death Metal". That's all I have to say. The Miracdle Man and the Holydiver can do that too.

The Bill Lawrence L-500XL is great for old school metal or thrash/progressive kinds but I'm not sure if it has the fatness for DM.

Keep in mind that some of these are first hand experience and some are from clips/videos.

Edit: Also I've heard some tracks from Severed Savior who use the Adder Plus Persuader Lead Custom. Nice punchy and tight yet smooth tone.

Edit 2: Sorry I forgot the great PATBs. All of them.
