Best pedals for clean boost?

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

You read the thread....you know what works best...Tubulator.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

I know I know, I just wann' see what everyone's using. I was wondering if there was any discernable difference in using an OD(read Tubulator ;) ) for a boost or something like an EQ? Can't wait till the tubulator gets here, it almost seems too good to be true, ya' know? $15 shipped brand new? If it sounds as good as the hype, I'm definitely gonna' order a backup.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

I'll use the AMZ Mosfet Boost (DIY project) or Boss Super Overdrive or the MXR Wylde Overdrive. Yes, there is a difference between using an EQ vs. and OD pedal vs. an actual boost pedal. Two of those have a clean volume boost, the other adds some dirt to the signal before it even hits the amp.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

Lots of people use the boss EQ as a clean boost plus it allows you to tailor the output of the guitar a bit also. Lots of people love that concept. Some also use a DOD Bifet pedal (I own one) for a little clean boost also plus it has a tad of brightness added in to give it a little more sizzle. I haven't even plugged mine in yet because it is at my little bro's house.

Tubulator is the best OD pedal I've tried hands down. Beats the POOP out of a TS IMHO, though a TS has it's uses with single coil pups when you want a little cleaner sound and you WANT the nasally mid-hump.

My favorites are EQs. Either a graphic EQ or a parametric EQ can be used effectively.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

Depending on the effect i want, i use either my BD-2 (big vol. boost, for a Boss), Highly Modded SpiderSD-1 ( http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g317/bluetone73/SpiderSD-1.jpg ) BIG BLOODY BOOST 'now', my custom made RAT, or my MXR Micro Amp !

Mostly my Micro Amp though !
I am thinking og getting another, and run them together . . .

. . . good idea ???

Any one ?

EDIT :

. . . i do NOT like to use my EQ as a boost, way too much hissssssssss !

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

I use a Visual sound route 66 OD side. For some reason, out of the stock SD1, modded SD1 (to TS808 specs with flatter EQ basically), and Digitech Bad Monkey, it's the thickest, most kickbutt boost I have.
The Bad Monkey is warmer sounding than my SD1. The stock SD1 is not transparent enough to my tastes. But the Route 66... yum.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

I like using Boss overdrives for a little graininess, sometimes.

JackdeFuzz, you seem like you have your boost needs taken care of. But if an EQ gave too much hiss, you can just EQ-out that hiss to some extent. That's why I like EQs; the sound can be customized with each different guitar or amp being used.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

Serious . . . ?

I really never tried to eq the EQ's hisss - honestly.
I assumed that it will alter my tone, so that idea NEVER even came up with me !

Will try it TONIGHT !

Thanx for the tip !

EDIT :

. . . I have soo many (any more than i mentioned) OD's, because i am not a fan of Distortion really, but " I LOVE OVERDRIVE !!!"

. . . a wise man once said : "too may overdive pedals in your collection, is never enough"

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

Most people I know who use EQs as boosters use them flat. I prefer to use all kinds of crazy settings with the sliders. Sometimes a little background noise can be filtered out if the higher frequencies are cut but the midrange frequencies are boosted. Background hiss is best dealt with in frequencies above 5kHz.

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

Xotic RC Boost for clean boosting.
Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso
Zvex SHO
Klon

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

I have a Duncan booster that I use sometimes but most of the time lately I have been using my Banzai Cold Fusion, it's as close to a Klon as you can get and costs less! I also want another ZVEX SHO...should have never sold mine!

Re: Best pedals for clean boost?

For years, I've used a Boss GE-7 EQ. I run it with a bit of overall boost, plus a big mid hump. I like the way it overdrives the input stage of Marshalls, and I get to tweak the EQ, unlike a straight booster.

Of course, this only works if you like the sound of your amp's input stage when it's getting slammed, so YMMV.

I've never noticed that it's unusually noisy, but I automatically switch it off when I'm not playing.
