Best pickup for low tuning

I am looking for a pickup for my guitar I have set up for low tunings...like drop B. I want something that will maintain a nice tight low end. Duncan recommends the custom but this pickup is almost to mid scooped and lacking a bit of character for my taste. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

custom mid scooped? not to my ears. i find low output bright pups hold together well with lots of gain and low tuning. jazz bridge for example

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

Jazz Bridge is definetly a good idea. What kind of music are you playing. How much gain do you use?

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

Also guitar you want to put the pup in is very important. What kind of woods is it made of?

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I love my DD SH-6 drop C or drop B I think it is the best pup I ever heard for that.
My humble $.02 of course.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I can tell you that I have a custom 5 in a les paul, I had it tuned down to C# standard for a long time, recently tuned it up and I didn't realize how much better the custom 5 sounds in standard tuning. Too much bass and not enough top and mids to keep things clear. I remember the JB being a bit better in drop C than the custom 5 seems in low tunings. The best I've had to for super tight and clear down low was the EMG 85.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I use a CustomCustom in my SG-X that's tuned to C standard and recommend it to everyone who wants a heavy downtuned tone.

It's almost the opposite EQ curve of the normal Custom...so it's midBOOSTED with tight lows.

just pull the ceramic magnet outta your Custom and replace it with an alnico 2 and you've got the CustomCustom...worth a shot man.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I think a Duncan Distortion is a decent pickup for lower tunning.

I'm running one in an Ibanez Strat type guitar in C tunning. Big, tight sound.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

For passive,SD suggests Custom,Distortion,Alternative8.. I haven't tried those p.u. yet,though.. Go for all kind of Blackouts if you want active. Still need advice here!

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

A full shred could work well for you. Its a tight, percussive pickup with plenty of treble content. Its slightly hotter than the jazz but is not a high output pickup.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

If it was a Tele I'd suggest a Quarter Pound, sounds great for low tunings IMHO...seems like everybody else has made some good suggestions so far, I'd personally go for the SH-6 for low tunings.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

George Lynch uses the JB and EMG 81 in his baritones that are tuned B-b

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I tune all 7 of my guitars to dropped C so I'll chime in:
The best pickup for drop tunings is: the Custom 5.
It's bass frequencies are right smack in the middle of B and C.
You may want to try the regular Custom if you like mids.....as the C5 doesnt have much.
The Distortion or Invader are also good tries if you like mids AND pickups hot enough to melt your face off........

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

i use a blackout neck in bridge. i have another guitar with alt 8

i tune to c sharp and somtimes drop b

both pups handle it well

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I find pups with with less prominent lows to work really well with low tunings and low end heavy amps (Rectos, etc.)....

Distortion and Full Shred have worked well for me, but I am not opposed to using a JB or others with the right EQ/amp settings.

Re: Best pickup for low tuning

I've always found that the Screamin Demon sounded very good with really low tunings.
