Best Pickup for VH1 tones...

Well, technically, it was the original '70s Bill Lawrence 500XL (from which the Dimebucker was later modeled) that Mr. Duncan rewound for Eddie, with the magnet swapped for an A2 out of Eddie's broken PAF. Seymour intentionally overwound the 500XL to make up for the reduced output of the A2 mag, creating the wind that would eventually become the basis for the SLUG
But there's also the rumor that Eddie cut off the ends of a P-90 with a table saw in order to stuff it in a humbucker rout, which got me thinking that something like the Phat Cat, another humbucker-sized P-90, might actually get in the ballpark tone-wise, at least for the first album sound :D

I've always admired Mr. Duncan for his skillz, too.
There are very few pickup cats out there that can melt epoxy out of those old XL's the way he could.
Dude is a mad genius, Eddie found the right guy to blow it up then re-invent the millivolt in a whole new way.

I was told by someone who knew Ed he used a Mighty Mite Motherbucker.
I totally trust that dude too, he knows what he's talking about.

Serious question, is that real? And what do you do with it (other than rock?)

Had one back in the early 80's in a 50's Tele. You could get fat metal tones to ice picky treble, very versatile. Mighty Mite should make it again.

this is ridiculous.

everyone knows the pickup has little to do with it. it's everything.

eddie's tone formula was discovered in 1987 by stephen hawking and it's a simple formula of , body wood*fretboard wood/string guage-brand of guitar cable(amp*pedals-pickup magnet)+strap.

and has nothing to do with his fingers or personality

Pretty sure the EVH sound is a thinline telecaster neck pickup into a stock Fender Twin . . . played really, really quiet. That ought to get you in the ballpark. : P

Now I’m thinking of Djang Halen, with Eddie as a Dutch-Belgian jazz guitarist. He made two-fingered tapping popular. All the audiences would be very respectful, and nobody would ever think of doing jump-kicks. He lived at 5150, Rue Méchant.

I am done chasing the VH sound now I am wondering how Eddie liked his coffee. Can I get that perfect balance of cream and sugar?
