I actuallly thing that the JB comes pretty close to an EMG sound. You just have to push it with an OD pedal, duncan pup booster, etc.

I have a JB in my one lester (the other two have the EMG's)
and i agree that if you push the JB it has a 81 type tone.
for zakk's tone you will need a JCM 800 with 6550's and a LP loaded with a 81/85 set
I know you asked about a non active pup but really there is NO pup like the 81 exactly.
the JB is close because it does not have a real big bass and has great treble bite
so with a EQ and a booster you will be in the ballpark at least
