Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

Tone is subjective. I really don't like JB but I think it's one of SD best seller…

And '57's are one of Gibson's biggest sellers...You don't have to follow like sheep. Advertising/marketing is a big part of sales.

Most punters cheerfully take what they are given. Somebody who does not sense that anything is lacking is unlikely to take steps to improve matters.

Replacing and/or modifying pickups is an extreme minority sport.

+1. We are indeed a small group. Most players don't know there's better out there, and if they do, they're often overwhelmed by the choices. Some find comfort in going with what they see advertised most, or what their local music store carries, regardless of whether it's a good fit for what they play.

Astro - for all of the years that you have been here….you know better.

What do YOU want?

More/less Bass? Tighter?
More/Less Mids? Where in the mid range?
More/Less Highs? Fat, sharp, what?
Output….

Guys - he is not an amateur. Don't give him the rookie speech. He knows better!

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

Glenn. You seem to be torn between more than one "flavour" of Gibson Les Paul voicing.

Check out this video clip. Then follow on to part two.

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

I'm officially done with my 57s.. I had it happen again, I was playing and then all the sudden BAM! God that sounds like crap!
I don't know what I want though? I wanna keep this guitar kinda low output.. I am just gonna sell em and find a set.
I'll probably end up with Slash's or PGs..

It's this kind of self-congratulatory bull that really makes it hard to respect anything you say. On those rare times when your preferences actually match up with the needs of a poster, it actually hurts to agree with you.

You don't think advertising sells products? When the average player ventures into unknown territory to get an aftermarket PU, he doesn't find comfort in getting one whose name he's seen repeatedly in ads online and in music store catalogs?

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

For me,,, I've run the gamut with Gibson pickups in an LP and was never happy with what I was getting from them. The best (again,, for me) that I've come across in my LPs is the Motor City Pickups Detroiter. It's mid focused, tough and punchy bottom end WITHOUT getting boomy/muddy and nice clean highs. These pickups cut!! The string balance and definition is unmatched in my experience. Wade makes them each by hand and you will have to wait 6 weeks to get them (he says 3-4, I've ordered 5 sets of MCPs and all were 6 weeks) but they ARE worth the wait!!

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

It's "there".

I will try a set of whole lotta humbuckers whenever I have the cash to throw away, just be to on the safe side. But it's there: stinging leads on the bridge pickup and glassy elegant sounds from the neck pickup. "pluck" and "ping" from the middle position.

I can't believe Gibson sends these out with 57 classics. They really do suck; not enough clarity!!!

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

Do you know what I mean? That's what my guitar and amp sound like right now. It's a nice sound, but I need it to be *there*. I'm hoping the tone in the clip and the style of the playing can give you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve. The 57 classics in my guitar seem muddy, how do I get this tone, or better?

I'm still confused. Is the OP saying that the sound clip is what his guitars sounds like NOW and he wants to get RID of, or is he saying that is what he WANTS his guitar to sound like?

I was looking for a more focused sound. I didn't realize the issue was that the 57 classics lack definition, they do sound VERY GOOD and it is a very FINE and LUXURIOUS sound...

but it's not for everything. My burstbuckers 2 and 3 seem to be snappier and clearer.

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

WLH bridge is a good suggestion. My fave PAF and is very versatile. Nice bite and grunt. Neck is too mushy and hot IME.

Seth Lover neck is nice. Great cleans. Don't remember the bridge but wasn't wowed like I was with the neck.

I like Burstbucker 2 / 1 set in my friends Paul. I've heard 3 / 2 and think they're sometimes too muddy.

I think the WLH set would be great there, and get you exactly what you are looking for. DOn't forget to let us know how it turns out when you finally get 'em.

Re: Best Pickups For My Les Paul?

Wow, everyone's saying 57's are muddy. I had the opposite problem. To me, they were too treble-y and lacked mids and overall character. They were sort of plain-jane.
