Best set for gary Moore tone?

Which of these pups are best to make an Eagle SI-880 http://www.eagleguitars.com/si-880.php, sound like Gary Moore?
These are the only options (available to me).
I live in a far away land and the only pup sets I can get here are:

-35th anniversary JB/Jazz
-Vintage Blues (59/59) set
-JB bridge / 59 neck
-Slash APH2 set

The amp is a Marshall JCM 2000-60w.

How about making a hybrid from the 35th anniversary set? Maybe swapping some mags (I have RCA2, RCA3, RCA4, A5, UOA5, RCA8, and C8).
Any comments are welcome!

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

For a Gary Moore tone, I can't think that you'd need to look much further than the 59 set.

I agree, but it's the guitar of a friend of mine who asked my opinion. He loves the way the 35th anniversary set looks because they're zebra, and the 59's are all black. He insists on zebra! I figured if lots of dudes in the forum say 59 I'll get my way. He figures that if people like the 35th ann set he'll get his way.
Please vote dudes!

Gary Moore blues tone won't be got with a JB

I would look to the PG, Seth's, Antiquities or 59's if you are constraining yourself to SD.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Does your friend really think that Gary Moore's tone could be achieved if pickups are Zebra?.
Seriously, he should think first on the sound then choose the sexiest available option (if some).

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

'59s are available in zebra.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

First of all, you've got to be Gary Moore to get Gary Moore's tone - a live version of GM, of course.

Second, Gary did not use uncovered pickups. He left the nickel covers on. This does affect the tone.

Third, you ought to buy from a seller who'll ship you whatever you really need.

I don't know what magnets are in the Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul. They could have been A2 or A5 or something else.

To get the tones of a 1957, 58, 59 or 60 Les Paul you want paf style humbuckers...not "hybrids" and not hot pickups like the JB. And get them with covers.

Maybe call the Seymour Duncan Company and get some direct advice on this.

I'd go with a set of Pearly Gates...covered. But that's because I prefer Alnico 2 paf style pickups.

My favorite humbucking pickups seem to always be paf style "clones" that have alnico 2 magnets. That's what reminds me most of the tones I hear from Peter Green, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton on Fresh Cream, etc.

No PG’s, or Antiquities available here. We must restrain ourselves to what we have, this aint the US. ¡Seth’s are available! Less power than the 59’s though, and Gary used plenty of gain, which do you think is best?

Thank you! I will make sure he reads this, because I had already told him so!

Not here, not this year, trust me.

Yeah, the Seths are available, they do have covers and A2,s. You prefer them over the 59's? The Slash set also have A2's, but Seth's or Slash's are more expensive you know.

Shipping here will double the price on any set, because taxes and what not. And it will take a full month!

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Thanks for your opinions!
The dilemma is now on either 59's or Seths. Hows-about 59 bridge and Seth neck?
No my buddy doesn't play like Gary, no one can. Never!

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

If your election is restricted to 59's or Seths then:

Seths are more vintage-correct and, probably, close in sound to what Gary Moore had in his ex-Peter Green axe. Only potential issue is microphonics, since Seths aren't wax poted.

59's are a bit hotter but, they have a lovely voice, with complex harmonics and, some rawness that I love but, under high gain basses can be overdone and start to sound a bit confussing. Maybe, adjusting the height a bit lower than usual can do a better job for that application.

Both will do an excelent job, I've played Gary Moore stuff with 59's (and even a bridge JB). IMHO, once you have one of the many variants of PAF-alike pickups, what you really need is a good Marshall (probably the BluesBreaker combo) or some pedal that can nail the tone (Plextortion, BB Plus, Box Of Rock, ...).

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

I have a few Seth's and '59's, and much prefer Seth's for the richer tone quality. The best PAF I've played. A number of forum membere have said they're never had feedback issues with them, even at high volumes and high gain.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Where exactly is here?
Puebla Mx. Beleive me customs (I mean the law not the pups) is sooo corrupt that dealing with them is absolute hell.

yeah I'm loving the ideas of
1-59 bridge (installing UOA5) / Seth neck.
2-Seth bridge (UOA5) / Seth RCA2
3- Seth A8 / Seth RCA4 :eyecrazy: (this might be plain nuts)

I do have the magnets and patience to fool around with the selected pups.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Any idea what he used in his Charvels?

Pretty sure he used EMGs in the Charvels from around 86-89 era. I really liked the tone he got with what appeared to be a stock Strat thru a blazing Marshall , the Corridor Of Power/Victims Of The Future era

We used to have the same problem here in Italy, but when the International couriers like UPS, DHL, etc. were given their OWN custom offices to clear the merchandise going through them, the problem of getting your goods stolen disappaired completely.

Maybe in your country is the same? It should be. Inform yourself, contact a DHL, FedEx and/or UPS point, I'm sure they'll be glad to steer you in the right direction.

Only caveat: it's going to cost you. :banghead:

But at least you'll be able to get the goods you're looking for.

HTH,

The 59 set should get you there with no problem. A good distortion pedal and a Marshall style amp and you're good to go. :)
