Best set for gary Moore tone?

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Just before his sad death Gary had started using Bare Knuckles PG set and I read that he was very happy with them.

Andrew, not pushing anything, just stating a fact.

Pepe, have a look at the BK site. Gary is one of the featured artists on the first page.

I think those are just The Mule with a flipped magnet in Neck.
And yes, The Mule are awesome but, I don't think he can source them.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Thanx for your replies gentlemen!
My bud has a good all tube Marshal JCM 2000, and I SWEAR that I will convince him to get either the 59s or Seths! Seths seem better to me but they are more expensive, so maybe 59b & Seth n is the answer.
Thanx Pepe for suggesting DHL, but the shipping would send it out of our price range.
Once the pups are installed, probably this weekend, I'll video tape and post it man.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

I agree with most of the guys that suggested pearly gates set. I used these very recently for the same reason in my LP.

My suggestion is that you use the bridge with a 300k tone, everything else 500k.

59 will probably be too harsh for the "blues era" or Gary Moore.

If Pearly Gates is not available then pick a good vintage output A2 set that is a little bit on the bright side.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

59s in zebra. Don't worry about the cover affecting tone: the effect it has is a very, very slight reduction in treble. An alternative way to achieve this is by making a very, very slight reduction in treble on your amp's EQ.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

I think the 59's would do it. I guarantee you that if Gary Moore was around to pick up a Les Paul with 59's in it and play it for you that it would sound exactly like Gary Moore.

On the other hand, if Eric Clapton were to pick up a Les Paul with 59's in it, plug it in and start playing, it'd sound just like ERIC CLAPTON. :)

Oh...if Eddie Van Halen picked up that same Les Paul with 59's and started playing, it'd then sound exactly like Eddie.

If I picked it up and started playing it, it wouldn't sound like any of those guys. It'd sound like me.

That said, I'd rather have alnico 2 humbuckers in that Les Paul. Nickel covered Pearly Gates would be just fine.

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

I have a few Seth's and '59's, and much prefer Seth's for the richer tone quality. The best PAF I've played. A number of forum membere have said they're never had feedback issues with them, even at high volumes and high gain.

I use stock Seths in my LP and never have microphonic issues, though I also don't use alot of overall gain, but higher volumes at times! :)

Exactly....It's still in the hands, touch, the feel, and the heart...That's where the tone really comes from..A Player still needs to use what his favorite players use/used though to get in the ballpark, though not always!

Re: Best set for gary Moore tone?

Yeah, if tone was all in the fingers and guitars and amps were irrelevant, big players wouldn't take their guitars with them on overseas tours. If you had a deal with Gibson, for example, you'd ring ahead and say "can you get 5 Les Pauls to the venue for me please" and they'd do it. Then your tech just restrings and sets them up, and off you go. Same with amps: "Hi, Marshall? 2 100W heads please - doesn't matter what model - oh and a 4x12".

On the other hand, Eddie Van Halen or Eric Clapton or BB King or just about any real player could do just that ^^^^^ and sound exactly like themselves.

Sorry to say,but over the years there have been players that have both used the same setup as that other player....Guess what...Ted Nugent still didn't sound like EVH through EVH's setup? Try to figure out why?

I can also tell you that anything a guy like Carlos Santana plugs into,is going to be recognizable...If not just for the tone...the style and the way the guy plays...Again...Hands,feel,etc...Not just the gear alone!

Found this to backup my earlier statement...Read through it...Opinions on both sides and I Like that..

I've never really thought tone was in my hands or in my fingers.

I guess Satchmo and I were being a little to philosophical, John. I think of the tone and choice of notes and phrasing and everything else that makes us each have our own unique voice as not coming so much from our fingers, or in Louis Armstrong's case, as not coming from his lips, as coming from who we are.

"You blows who you is."

Your playing sounds like it does because of who you are.

I was trying to keep it simple by just saying that "I" feel our overall tone comes from the way we approach the instrument first..Anything I plug into always ends up sounding like me...The guys laugh cause if I Play through my Marshall,Fender,or Vox setups,I still sound like me...If my buddy Ron plays through my setups,he doesn't sound at all like me...So this always proves that the tone I hear coming out of the amp is based on the player's feel,touch,etc....:)

I find the pedals and the other stuff between the guitar and the amp is stuff to enhance the basic tone I hear...Not sure if any of this makes any sense today? LOL
