When I Owned my Tremoverb(Sold it).....I found I Liked the orange channel with 6L6s and the tube rectifier setting and reverb...I still felt the clean channel in my own Dual Rec was a bit sterile sounding though..An open cabinet also helps get the clean tone happening over the closed back..

I am talking about livable clean, I use a lp with an emg 81 in the bridge and 89 in the neck so I can coil tap and reduce the output gain of my signal, that being said...I have 6l6's in it and i have it in the clean/green mode with the switch on spongy and the fx loop on at about 2-4 running into a virtulizer pro for a little bit of reverb. It probably needs new tubes in it and i was thinking of EL34's because they don't run as hot, and i don't need all the gain.
I hope it gives you a better idea

I have an old vertical mesa 2x12 that is stero, half open and half closed, and a 1960b that i use with it of and on, can't really decide on which one sounds better...or if they sound best together, well you get the idea

EL34s run at a hotter setting, and sound much different. They also have less clean headroom....also, changing the power tubes won't have much of an effect on your preamp gain....they'll actually sound dirtier than your 6L6s do.
When I want cleans I set the gain between 09:00 and 10:30 (depending on how clean I want it) and scoop the mids for a smoother sound.
When I want overdriven cleans, I put the gain between 10:30, switch the voice to pushed, put the mids up around noon, and dime the master volume. If I need more grind, I add more mids.
Those are the two basic settings I use. Here's a pic of the first one...pic

Thanks, I'll check it out tomorrow and see what i think.
My preamp tubes are the mesa high gain 12ax7's with the little rubber bootie on them so they might add a little extra sizzle to my clean stage.

that's almost exactly how i run the clean channel on my single recto. try scooping the mids, it really does smooth it out nicely, and it still cuts through like it's nobody's business.

That was the main reason I sold mine to mrid a long time ago. Sounded great with any kind of distortion, but the cleans form the 81 and 85 just weren't happening at all. No volume changes or anything could put out a decent clean tone.

I have the 89 in the bridge and it cleans up nicly and has good volume response, but out of the coil-tapped mode you are correct-these things don't clean up. I also have a Dr.Z Maz Jr. that I use this guitar with and the coil tapped function cleans up nicly on it as well.
