I'm surprised to see that so little people voted for the invader, metallica supposedly james hetfield used it in the rtl era.

And Kill Em All. It was the bridge pickup in his Electra Bolt Neck V copy.

I prefer the JB. I've only had EMGs, Dimarzio distortions and DD aside from that. I feel I get more control with less output and better sound as my amp volume goes up. I don't believe in more distortion equals more metal and the JBs seem to let me use my EQ and OD better. I've dropped from 100W amps to a peavey micro and I get a great metal sound with the JB, a Maxon OD, my lead channel gain set just under 2, and out an Orange 4x12. It cuts through a mix real well. I would really like to try the custom and the BW though.

I voted 'custom' because custom 5 wasn't on there. I'm loving the custom 5 for Thrash /crossover hardcore type stuff. It Does super tight gallops and awesome chugs. It just sounds huge and tight. I Like it!

Track I did a while back - playalong with Ride The Lightning using a KV2T with a Custom, through a Line6 M13 (Big Muff Pi pedal model), into a JCM800 and Carvin 2x12 cab with British 12s in it.

Isolated guitar track (sloppy, I know)

That sounds good! Yeah, I'm really liking the custom 5. Interested to try some mag swaps to see which version I like best, Although I don't really feel like it's missing anything at the moment. I need to record some stuff and post it up.

Re: Best Seymour Duncan Bridge pickup for a six string metal sound

Only because I've mainly been using a JB for most of the time I've had a guitar I will say that I've found the JB to be one of the most versatile pickups I've had in just my one Les Paul. That pick up has satisfied my every need, even if it is biting at times. I like it's nature. I respect it for the beast that it is. It's like a PAF that punched another PAF in the mouth, and then got struck by lightning because karma, died and came back to life as a PAF with a second row of shark teeth.

I'd also like to add that I had a set of 59s in another Les Paul and while I found them to be mildly tamer compared to the JB, they would really shake the bottom in a pissed off Marshall. I got some of my best Master of Puppets tone from a 59 bridge. Sure, I could get some EMGs (I'd prefer to roll with X series or the Het Set because the Het Set is balls to the wall with clarity), or I could get a Distortion or something sludgy. But, I'm all for versatility and the 59s are very capable pickups. Don't get me started on how great a lead tone is on the neck model.

Re: Best Seymour Duncan Bridge pickup for a six string metal sound

I thought I posted earlier not sure where that went, but here's a basic version.

As a the owner of a JB in a Les Paul I will say that I have found it very capable for the stuff I play, metal included. I don't usually fool with stuff tuned down past C# which really is just a half step down in drop D for me I guess. Having been in cover bands I've had to play a ton of different things and my JB Les Paul has been a mainstay for years. I like it's sound, it's signature searing tone. It nails everything I need it to. Many people complain that it has no bottom end, but I would argue that it does if tended properly. I seem to find it shines tuned half a step down. Playing anything from Guns N Roses to Van Halen era music is made a bit more beefy to me. It cuts through like a knife on stage, in the rehearsal room, and in the studio for me. It can be flabby when tuned low. And when tuned too high it fizzles out on chords. But to me the JB sounds the best when it's in its natural habitat.

It likes hard rock, but it loves metal. It's like a metal pickup that has this classic sound to it. Driving. It can be very biting at times but that's what I like about it. When EQ'd with my Marshall and Orange it excels at hi-octane rock.

Sure I could get EMGs, Distortions, and even sludgy, but needing versatility at my disposal I have found that while other pickups might to metal more metally, the JB takes just about anything you feed it. It's like if a PAF punched another PAF in the mouth, and then was struck by lightning because karma, died and came back to life as a PAF with a second row of shark teeth.

Re: Best Seymour Duncan Bridge pickup for a six string metal sound

well the JB has pretty much been the most used one, the distortion comes second, with the custom as the third most used on metal, but my vote goes to the Dimebucker as like Black Winter's it can do practically every style of metal, yup it can do early sabbath as good as a humbucker can, it will also do nice later sabbath as it will do Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera of course and all the way up to Cannibal Corpse, on this aspect of metal versatility the JB isn't the champion, as it's pretty loose for some styles.
