I recently got an guitar, and I'm getting back into Punk Rock.

I need an small amplifier, as I'll be playing in my living room.

I tried the Boss Katana, but I wasn't to get a modern enough gain.

Any suggestions? I was thinking about the THR10 II. It seems to have a modern high gain setting.

I do like the Blackstar HT1, but I don't think it's enough gain for chuncky rythme.

Budget is about 500-600$.

I can't help too much with your question except to say that the THR10 II is a killer little amp. I got two. Nice axe, btw.

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

Every kind, or pretty much :)
Green Day, Blink 182, Fallout Boy, Sum 41, NOFX, Paramore...

Mostly Pop-Punk, but I listen to a bunch of stuff.

Why not just use a bluez driver for your chunky rhythm?

It’s all modded marshalls and dual rectifiers. Less gain than than you think, look for some isolated tracks on youtube. To be honest, the Katana should do it. We used to do it with Line 6 Spyders, but with the luxury of reflection, the tracks we recorded with a Marshall Valvestate sounded better than the Line 6 tracks.

One of the modeling amps is a good idea, that way you get the tone, then can scale the volume.

Those bands are more Mesa Rectifier modern scooped style tones than the 80s punk on JCM800s and Seventies JMP/Plexi style punk sounds.

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

Right, I've been looking and looking.
I have a feeling I'll have to get a Rectifier 25.

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

Maybe a small cheap clean tube amp and a mesa v-twin pedal would be workable
Or tech 21 sansamp us metal or similar

Some kinda mesa-ish pedal for your base tone then you're like less dependent on finding the perfect amp
People charge a lot for that boogie type tone, except the bugera trirec was a cheap option
There's one of those hotone heads that is supposed to be rectifierish too I recall

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

I'd get an amp that is a great pedal platform and use a pedal for gain. It is tempting to use the amp for everything, but it will be more expensive than a Katana. Plus, the punk ethos is to use whatever you have (the cheaper and more beat up the better) and rock that thing.

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

Thanks everyone. I ended up buying a used Rectifier 25 on Reverb, just had to push the budget a bit.
I'd just end up buying and selling all kind of gear to try and get the tone, might as well get the amp now!

Re: Best small amplifier for Punk Rock

That katana will do any kind of gain. There's a bazillion effects in there. I'd suggest the guv'nor OD, moderate gain, and play with the EQ.

Smart move, especially for a genre that isn't heavy on the effects.
