Best solid state for Metal?

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

That's just what it is, though it needs some love. Speakers are a little rough, and at some point, the ends of all of the knobs got broken off in some sort of auto accident. It still works, but you need a needle nose to change the settings.
If anyone cares to recommend a site to get decent replacement speakers or pots repaired...

Try this one:

Also, these knobs will fit 250ML:

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Just read a site stating it was often referred to as "the Lunchbox of the Gods"

Haha. I know Lifeson liked his a whole bunch. Maiden too. Good luck with it. Probably some new speakers and knobs and maybe get pots cleaned and it will sound like it used to.

^^
I'll bet. Don't forget though, the Randall under it is an "ES" model, going through a cabinet loaded with Jaguars, which as far as I can tell, are Vintage 30's Celestion made for Randall. 120 watts of solid state hell, through 4 12" speakers.

Well, yeah, there's that durned old beast too..

:D

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Sadly I don't usually turn the master volume up much past "3".

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I've owned an RG80ES, RG100ES, RG100HT, RGT100ES (tube version), Century 200 II & an 8100.
All great amps. Wish I still had them.

Would also like to have an Ampeg SS one day...super versatile.
Mostly associated with the 90's death metal tones, but I saw Eyehategod last year and Jimmy Bower was plugged straight in to an SS-150 -- it was a huge, gnarly, nasty, sludgy tone from hell.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Most of these can be had pretty cheap:

Peavey XXL
Marshall Valvestate (8100 or VS100)
Crate GX130
Ampeg VH140
Ibanez TBX150
H&K Warp
Randall RG100

If you have the money, the ISP Theta is probably the "best" but they can be pretty hard to find and fairly expensive compared to the others.

Which of these would you say have a great sounding clean channel as well?

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I don't use the clean channel, but just about all solid state amps have decent clean channels, it's part of their design.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I know I already mentioned it, but thought I'd post a link of the AMT Stonehead. I love mine and think its one of the best sounding amps I've ever owned, solid state, tube, or hybrid. Mine is new Yellow color.

The older Green ones and these Black ones still needed to be ordered specific to power requirement of country (110 or 220v), but new ones like mine (Yellow color) are universal power and just need to choose the correct power cable for whichever country you are in.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Also does more than Metal

Now, he mentions his issue with his 4 button footswitch, but I have zero issues using three two button AMT FS2 footswitches with TRS cables. They take up all three foot switch jacks in the back. 4 buttons work for selecting channel and the other two buttons for switching between A and B master volumes and fx loop on/off. Works perfectly like that and how designed as well.

Ampeg VH140C or SS140C or SS150H. Crate VTX350H or GTX 3500H. Both these crates are exactly the same except the headcase. Tommy Victor from Prong and Danzig uses the VTX350H. They have the same lead chsnnel as the Ampeg VH140C
