Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Lots of these 'soiled state' amps sound pretty good clean. Nothing great, I can assure you that...They are simply no match at all for a great tube amp.
Old Kustoms seem to be voiced around blackface Fenders, as do old Acoustic solid state guitar amps and maybe the Yamahas.
I even got a denet clean sound out of the old Peavey Solid State amp I have.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I also could never quite bring myself to part with my Peavey Audition Chorus even after I went all-tube. It's a grungy little '80s vintage practice amp that drives the speakers in stereo when using the chorus. Good dirt, but thin cleans.

Amen to that. Once you've played a decent tube amp, no ss amp does it ever again.

^ I would say those old Peaveys have aweful , grainy dirt, but fairly decent cleans. But then again your the guy who thinks an Acoustic bass amp sounds great for guitar.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

those old roland combo amps that were hugely popular must be solid state. i never tried one but they must be good given their popularity back in the day.

Yeah, Jazz is a different ball of beans. Some jazz cats actually dig that hi-fi solid state Roland tone.

:thanks:

Hey, I was young and foolish and broke. And besides, the Acoustic had nice reverb and plenty of headroom. No dirt, but I had pedals and crappy speakers for that.

All Peaveys are kinda cheesy, but it sounded right back in the '80s. It still sounds right back in the '80s today!

Yup, someone from every style plays a solid state. Solid states played by the right person can sound better than a tube amp.

4 solid state recordings

Early Solid State Fenders:
Guitar was both SS and tube amps. The guitarist liked the directness of solid state that tubes just dont have.

Small Fender SS Practice amp

Marshall Valvestate

Acoustic Solid State

I could go on for days if you want.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I love my micro bass stack from Ampeg (micro VR), it gets GREAT cleans and with an OD pedal, it gets pretty good disto as well

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I'm still a tube amp tone snob, but the technology of these modeling and or ss amps are getting alot closer to what the tube amp does...I Like and use both..Depends on the amp!

Yeah, no. I'm gonna have to agree with the Metal Man on this one, even if he is hammered. Modelers are getting better, but they are still very very far away from the real thing.

I really wish I had made the jump to tube snobbery earlier in life because I play so much better through tubes. It is hard to explain but a tube amp just responds better to the guitar. It allows me to hear (and control) nuances of tone that simply do not exist on a solid state amp. Sometimes I wonder how much better a player I would be today if I had been hearing that detail all along.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I once played through an old Randall half-stack that I thought was pretty amazing.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I have a Dime 1/2 stack for sale in the Trading Post. It sounds damn good, it just doesn't fit the music we are playing.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

The roland JC 120 was very popular back in the late 70's and early 80's, often paired with a Marshall.
They're still very popular and available.

I still have my old Fender and Marshall tube amps and I have been playing through tube amps close to 30 years...I still love and favor tubes for the things you mention....I mainly use the modeling amp stuff here at home because I Like the effects and it sounds good at lower volumes where I play/practice..

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I had a Randall rg100 and it was pretty much. The cleans were cool and the dirty side got pretty heavy too. Over all a nice amp.
