Lots of theses solid sate amps sound pretty good clean. Nothing great, I can assure you that...They are simply no match at all for a great tube amp.
I also could never quite bring myself to part with my Peavey Audition Chorus even after I went all-tube. It's a grungy little '80s vintage practice amp that drives the speakers in stereo when using the chorus. Good dirt, but thin cleans.

those old roland combo amps that were hugely popular must be solid state. i never tried one but they must be good given their popularity back in the day.
:thanks:^ I would say those old Peaveys have aweful , grainy dirt, but fairly decent cleans. But then again your the guy who thinks an Acoustic bass amp sounds great for guitar.
Yeah, Jazz is a different ball of beans. Some jazz cats actually dig that hi-fi solid state Roland tone.

Incredible.
I love my micro bass stack from Ampeg (micro VR), it gets GREAT cleans and with an OD pedal, it gets pretty good disto as well

I'm still a tube amp tone snob, but the technology of these modeling and or ss amps are getting alot closer to what the tube amp does...
Yeah, no. I'm gonna have to agree with the Metal Man on this one, even if he is hammered. Modelers are getting better, but they are still very very far away from the real thing.
I really wish I had made the jump to tube snobbery earlier in life because I play so much better through tubes. It is hard to explain but a tube amp just responds better to the guitar. It allows me to hear (and control) nuances of tone that simply do not exist on a solid state amp. Sometimes I wonder how much better a player I would be today if I had been hearing that detail all along.
