Best speaker for a 5e3?

Re: Best speaker for a 5e3?

ive had a 5e3 for a while and had a red fang in it for a good long time, sounded good but the housing was SOOOO close to the power tubes i had one break when someone was "helping" me move my gear. then i put a g12h30 in and that is the speaker that stayed in there. sounds loud and full, cuts thru a mix well, and has a strong top end without being shrill.

if you need more volume and a tighter bottom then look at a 5v4 recto tube. ups the voltage enough to give a tighter bolder tone but you do lose a little of the character of the stock amp. its not bad at all, just not the same. ive run it both ways and have found both to fit certain situations better

Re: Best speaker for a 5e3?

Funny, I've got plenty of headroom to work with when I gig using the 5E3. I can't turn it up into drive territory otherwise I'm being told to turn down and I start having problems hearing the band.

FWIW I've got a 1960 Jensen P12Q in mine. I had a reissue Jensen C12N but it sucked. I've heard nothing but good things about the 12A125A. I've also wondered what a ceramic magnet speaker would sound like in this thing.

Re: Best speaker for a 5e3?

yeh there is always the rectifier tube thing. thanks jeremy. looks like i have plenty options.
PTman...interesting...so you reckon i'd still need to use a pedal if i want dirt at reasonable volumes?

Re: Best speaker for a 5e3?

so...a friend lent me his 5e3
what i learned is this:
the amp i already have is pretty close to perfect, so i guess there is no advantage in getting a 5e3.
Thank you to everyone who offered their advice.

Re: Best speaker for a 5e3?

The Red Fang was THE speaker for the 5e3, but i had no idea about the fitment issues detailed by our fearless leader.I had a Clark 5e3, what an amazing amp! Not enuf volume for me, but I'm a metalmaniac. The Clark had a Red Fang and sounded magnificent, but agian, I'm a volume junkie.
IMHO, the Red Fang is just about the best vintage -modern speaker ever made; a great, fantastic sounding and well made, reasonably priced Alnico speaker that can get so much vintage alnico tonality with a better handling power.
