It is obvious that speakers play huge role in sound but there are too many out there. I just want to get your opinion on the best speakers for Metal and Rock genre. Or maybe a combination of them in a stereo cabinet?

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

Vintage 30's mixed with G12T-75's or all Greenbacks work well for me, Lately I've prefered the Greenbacks.....

.............You're gonna hear a lot of different opinions!

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

Do you mix the Vintage 30's and G12T-75's vertically, horizontally or diagonally? Are there any other good options better then Celestions out there?

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

Mixing the G12T75 and the V30 is a popular solution for hard rock and metal, because the T75 has scooped mids, big bottom and sharp treble, and stays relatively clean, while the V30 has strong mids and tight bass, and adds color and dimension to distortion textures. Since the V30 is louder than the T75 putting them in an X pattern in a 4x12 is popular. In a stereo cab you may want the V30 on bottom and the T75 on top-or maybe the other way.

Greenbacks have always been popular among shredders although its mostly associated with classic rock and blues. The New EVH speaker is a G12M20 Greenback. But it lacks the thump for some modern rock styles.

The G12H30 is strongly associated with Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. It stays together better than the GB when being pushed, has awesome depth and dimension and sounds warmer than the V30.

The G12-65 is another Celestion speaker. It was the standard celestion speaker during the early 80's, so it obviously was much used for 80's metal, but is also well liked among blues artists like Robin Ford. The G12-65 is kinda like a GB, but with later breakup and stronger bass. Compared to the 75 it doesnt have the mids all scooped out.

So far these have all been Celestion speakers but EV's are popular for modern rock too. EV's are totally clean compared to Celestions.

Eminence makes clones of the popular Celestions that are called the Redcoat series, and they also make clones of American voiced speakers.

Lots and lots of options....

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

LPB, thanks for your descriptions. Which speaker is the best for that classic Marshall crunch? I've got Eminence Governors, and I feel like they're just a touch too tight to give the tone I'm looking for, but I don't know what a better option would be. I was thinking either Private Jack or Wizard to match with a Governor in a 2x12.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

The classic Marshall crunch is the GB (Private Jack among Emi's).
The H30 (Wizard) uses a heavier magnet so it it's much tighter with stronger, deeper, bass compared to the GB.
The V30 (Gov) is also a heavy magnet speaker, but its brighter (to most people's ears) than the H30, because it was originally intended as an ceramic, and therefore lower cost, alternative, to typically chimey alnicos.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

It seems that when it comes to metal Celestions seems to be the only choice. I would like to buy a 4X12 cabinet and I have 3 choices in mind;
- Mesa Boogie Rectifier Cab (I think it has V30s. Correct me if I am mistaken)
- Marshall 1960DM (V30s)
- Avatar Contemporary Custom (V30s and G12T-75 mix)

What do you guys think? Would you suggest any other for some tight heavy metal sound?

If you want ''tight metal'' sound, I can vouch for the Rectifier cab. I have the 2x12 version, and it's a beast. Some people don't like the V30s, as described in a recent thread, because they are very focused on some frequencies... but if you want tight, and you want to cut through the mix, they might be what you are looking for.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

what are the differences between the stiletto an rectifier cabs. They both seem to have same speakers.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

The difference is the size of the cabinet. Before the Stiletto head was introduced, Mesa offered the 4x12 recto cab in two sizes. The standard cab (which is larger than Marshall's 1960 cabs) and the traditional cab (sized like a 1960). Now, Mesa offers the traditional cab as the Stiletto cab and also offer 1x12 and 2x12 Stiletto cabs that are smaller than their recto brothers. I have the straight front traditional cab made before it was called the Stiletto cab and it sounds darker and smoother than the two Marshall 1960 cabs I have. One of my Marshall cabs has V30's (straight) and the other G12-H30's (slant). The G12-T75's that came in both Marshall cabs were just not my cup of tea, not enough mids. Mesa's build quality is excellent and that cab has provided years of rock & roll goodness!

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

I have two Marshall cabs (both from the 1990s); a 1960A and a 1960B. Both have G1275T and V30 in an X pattern. I also sealed the front baffle with a bead of silicon.

Works for me.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

Hey this is a great site! thnx for the heads up. this guy really understands these amps and the speaker combo options. Hard to find people like this who really understand what they are doing. very cool:bigok:

Glad i could help !

:)

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

I was looking for an American alternative to the Celestion V30's and am
in love with the Eminence Governors.

They're sound is tight with a ton of good mids and when turned up, produce a
killer top end that isn't ice picky like the V30 can be.

Most people who say the Governors are dark I believe either didn't break the speakers in or didn't play them too loud. This is where the Emi Governors want to be played.

Re: Best speakers for Metal and Rock?

How does sealing the front baffle change the sound? I have never heard of this approach before.

What do you guys think about the Celestion G12K-100s? How are they comparing to V30s and G12T-75s?
