Best Tone from a Practice Amp

I need a practice amp that sounds as good as possible. Also need to mention that a good distortion channel is a necessity. I was thinking of maybe trying a Roland Cube. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

Best sound I ever got from a practice amp is from my Vox Brian May Deacie. The little white amp that says Brian May on the front. Really sounds good. Incredible distortion!!

Are those still in production?

Vox Pathfinder 15R! great cleans for a small amp, and very pedal friendly. crank up the gain and volume and you get a tube amp feel.

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

I've only played 3 transistor amps a Fender Princeton 90 212 or something like that can't remember exactly, an 80's Roland Cube and a Laney. THe best clean was the fender distortion ok but a bit nasally and harsh. The CUBE had a great crunchy clean dirty ish tone. Laney was the most even but less exciting. I used the dirty channel and cleaned it up which sounded warmer then the clean.

You should check out the Vox VT 15, or even the DA 5. Give them a try in the store and see if they have the tones you're looking for.

I don't think so. You can find them, though. I think they're worth looking for. There are a lot of very good practice amps around right now. You just need to go play a bunch, listen and then decide which is what you need and can afford.

Got one and I really like it for what it is.............

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

Look at the Peavey Rage 258. It's only $100 on MF new and it sounds really great for a solid state amp. It sounds better than a 65 watt crate amp and a 50 watt Marshall (Both SS). And it is comparably loud too.

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

I have experienced the Roland CUBE 30 (is mine) and the Vox ADVT15-XL (being a tube amp) And I loved the the Cube a bit more. The modeling distortions on the Vox sounded weird to me, but it has a lot of effects and have quite a lot of parameters for amp built effects. The Cube has a very "Clean" clean channel and I love the distortion channel. It has the right amount of distortion for pretty much w/e you want. For sure the sound doesn't break up like a tube amp...

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

For REALLY quiet practice the Vox Amp Plugs are great. My "Classic" (Marshall) version is great. Sounds like a quad cab through a pair of $10 headphones.

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

I find the Roland Cube sounds very sterile and harsh like a keyboard amp.

The VT series Vox modellers are incredible. Don't know much about the older ADVT's but the current line (VT15, 50, etc..) are awesome. My favorite feature is the adjustable poweramp output on the back so you can really fine-tune the overall volume and how much of a 'cranked tube' sound you want.

Re: Best Tone from a Practice Amp

I second.....errrrrr... I third the Vox Valvetronix amps. The new ones (22 amp models) are pretty sweet for the price. You should go and try one out.

*edit*

That happens to be the best feature, IMO. You can crank it way freakin LOUD or have cranked tone at bedroom level.

The new Vox VT series is very good, much better than the the AVT or XL series.

Blackstar HT-5 definite option.
