Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

A friend of mine is looking to upgrade his amp. He plays through a Line 6 PODxt live so the amp doesn't need any extra features, just a good clean sound. Whats the best 50-100watt tube amphead for the job?

I cant remember the amps name but, it was designed specially with a Pod or a modeler in mind..

Re: Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

why not poweramp? mesa's totally kills.. or if your friend quite tight on budget, carvin's very good too..

Re: Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

Atomic is what that amp is called. I am not sure on the wattage of them though????

Re: Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

Oh yeah poweramps....I forgot about them as an option.

Also it needs to be able to deliver a 4 ohm load. It is a Line 6 cab with two 8 ohm jacks.

Those units are designed to be run into a full range PA. They sound better IMO into a keyboard or bass amp for that reason. I have a XT right now it's not like a real dedicated guitar pre amp that you put in a rack like a Marshall JMP-1 or a Carvin Tone Navigator. I would go with a PA SS power amp for a POD.

+1
sometimes when I'm on stage and direct wasn't possible, i prefer keyboard amps rather than guitar amps for my POD.. it sounds much..much better.. well.. you'll get the famous tube dynamics from plugging into the guitar amp's return, but tube amps totally destroy your presets.. usually it'll sound thin,
ear-piercing and just "weird".. whilst by plugging it into a keyboard amp, you'll get pretty much the same result as playing direct into the PA.. never tried bass amp though..

Try looking for looking for one of the 200 watt Rocktron Velocity amps. Just about any solid state power amp will work. Make sure you get one w/ plenty of clean power though. You don't want to hear a that kind of solid state amp start to break up.

Re: Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

So a Line 6 PODxt live, one of the big ass pedalboard looking things, will actually sound better plugged into a solid state amp??

no. Using the presets that sound killer through the PA will sound better through a ultra clean SS amp. If you take the time to tweak the presets, it will sound better through a tube. How much better ?

My advice...

Tell your friend to sell his Pod XT and buy a Tube amp and some pedals.

He's going to eventually do it, so he might as well save time and do it now.

Actually having said that, the new Spider Valve/Bogner sounds great, tell him to buy that and kill two birds with one stone.

Atomic if cab sims are to be used.

Otherwise, find something with a nice speaker/cab and an FX loop - or just a power amp. Turning off cab sims, I got some VERY good sounds running into a Spider Valve's FX loop. Bonus being that the SV has a usable preamp to fall back on if something bad happens to the Pod.

Re: Best tube amp for Line 6 PODxt?

Actually he was thinking about getting a line 6 valve but it would defeat the purpose of buying one if he already has the modeling elements at feet.

Are the mesa power amps expensive? They are tube powered. Or maybe he'd be good with an inexpensive all tube amp like a peavey?

You guys are confusing me with the solid state talk. :fart:

SS or tube?
