Best Value/budget Gibson Les Paul (review)

I purchased this guitar a few months back, but never got around to writing up a review. In a way, it's better I write one up later than earlier. After being able to understand it and actually play it extensively. The guitar is none other than a;

Gibson Les Paul Studio 60s(otherwise known as Deluxe).

This is a rare/limited line that is exclusively for MF or GC. It's named Deluxe on those stores, but labeled 60s on the website.

Breaking down the components;

BODY:
Now this is a smoking guitar, a TRUE Les Paul hands down. Don't let the name Studio mislead you, it's more a Trad than it is a Studio. Unlike every other studio out there, it's not chambered but rather it's swiss-cheesed (Gibson’s traditional 9-hole relief). The Finish is not as nice as a Trad, but very aesthetically pleasing none the less. The back of the guitar has a natural finish to it which is literally breath taking. The book matched maple top on the mahogany body gives off a nice appearance of a binding without actually having a binding. The high-gloss Vintage Sunburst finishes accents the beautiful wood grain patterns of the maple top.

NECK:
It has a slim-tapered, mahogany 60s profile. I prefer it that way. Able to freely move around the rosewood fret board like butter. Intrigue chording can be done with ease.

ELECTRONICS/HARDWARE:
500k pots, Tune-o-matic bridge/tail piece, 490R with Alnico II magnet, Burstbucker Pro with Alnico V magnet, Coil tap.

TONE:
Natural tone is second to none. PLug in, the neck (490R) is a bit muddy. It works for some cleans if EQd right. Swapping it out with a SD Pearly Gates. Bridge is solid.

More coming.

I sold an ESP LTD EC400 VF and a EESP LTD PB500 ASB, plus invested money into this guitar to give you an idea of it's worth to me. Hands down better than the two LTDs combined. (not to take anything away from em).

Re: Best Value/budget Gibson Les Paul (review)

I keep hearing that LTD's are pretty rockin.

I've also read a lot about Gibson's poor business practices, QC issues, price hikes, the CEO generally being a pompous asshat, and then I think...

Man Gibson sure does make some b1tchin guitars.

The recent SG I bought is a personal affirmation of this, and then hearing other's success... I mean, sure there are better guitars out there, some of them may be cheaper than what gibson charges, but for some people there's no substitute.

Did I miss a NGD post!!!

I wanna see some pix.

The LTD does make quality guitars that are worthy of being a workhorse for shows and at the very least a solid backup. That being said, I would rather have an American made product. There are good guitars out there and there are lemons out there regardless of brand.

There is no substitute when it comes to Gibson. My next guitar will either be a Gibson Flying V or SG.

Well, the title of this thread was a little misleading...

That looks good dude. Depending on the size of my tax return, this could be in the running for a touring backup for my Trad.

Nice score! Enjoy!

Re: Best Value/budget Gibson Les Paul (review)

Just wanted to bump this thread. I agree, there are some killer Studios out there. I have a 2003 LP Standard and am looking for my next LP, looking at a used 1990s or a new Studio Deluxe 60s or 50s. I prefer a fatter neck, so the 50s may be the one. I hope I can find one in the 8-9 lb range. :)
Still have your studio?

Re: Best Value/budget Gibson Les Paul (review)

I stopped and played one of these today and I am really impressed. I believe the only thing I would do is replace the bridge BB Pro with a Rio Grande BBQ zebra coils and replace the stock coil splitting with the Duncan Triple Shot system. Maybe a fret dressing from my friend who does amazing work and it should rock as much as my 2003 LP Standard.

I played one of the Studio Deluxe IIs at a local GC, and it haunted my thoughts and dreams for a week.
