Best Value For Money Boost?

I need a pedal to run after my Sansamp to boost my solos. It'll be purely to boost the volume NOT to OD the amp.

Can anyone recommend the best value for money one?

Lowest price Vs best (most transparent) tone?

Thanks!

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

If you're looking for a post-gain boost, it's hard to beat a Boss GE-7 and they're reasonably cheap.

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

I have a GE-7, and it's terrible, from a purist's standpoint; it's incredibly coloured and NOISY! Look into getting a used Duncan Pickup Booster or Fulltone Fat Boost from Ebay. If you can't afford one, SAVE up for one! My theory is: Do it Right the First Time. You will save more time and money doing it right the 1st time, then through constant experimentation, especially if you have a finite budget.

well spoken, you can buy around and around it till you spend more than if you just would have got if the first time, yup, I have done this too. but I think every one has once or twice. :dammit:

Gotta vote in favor of practicallity!! These guys are right, you can spend $20 now and add that to the cost of the good stuff when you buy it, or just save up and buy the good stuff with $20 extra! The SD Boost is an amzingly versatile pedal. EXTREMELY versatile!!! Not a bad way to spend $80 for a new one. Might snag one on eBay for less, but a worthwhile investment!!

I have to agree with you on this, but he's looking for a post-gain boost. The SD pickup booster should work well for this (although it's kinda spendy), I'm not sure about the Fulltone. It sounds great pre-gain, I've never tried it after.

I use my Fat Boost after the Full-Drive 2. I've called Fulltone about this, and you can swap the order ... it doesn't matter where you put the boost.

It looks cool, but I have no knowledge of this company or product, and can't recommend it. I can only advise on what I've had experience with. There's no tone control on this pedal tho, and sometimes you want the boost to cut a bit while you're boosting, too.

Not to promote our stuff, but our little Hydra booster is very quiet and add very little colour to the sound.

Dude, if you have a product worth promoting, DO IT!!!

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

Some suggestions. An MXR Micro Amp for cheap and, if you have a few more dollars, the Bad Bob Boost. Heard very good things about the Barber Launch Pad also.

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

this might sound stupid, but what is the difference between post gain and pre gain?

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

I have the BBB and it's a great pedal...at unity gain levels it makes your tone sound like your tone but on steriods. Great pedal. From what I hear, the SD pedal is great as well.

I was thinking about an RGW Bad Bob: http://www.rgwelectronics.com/badbob.html

Apparently it's the same Jack Orman circuit that Fulltone based the Fat Boost on.

Harmony Central reviews look pretty good... Same price to the UK as the SD...

Whadya think?

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

If you want minimal tone colouration, just use a volume pedal in the loop.

Set your amp for your lead level, then use the pedal to drop it to rhythm level.

Other than that, I second the use of a Boss GE-7. I use a modded version that's much cleaner and much less noisy.

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

My current favorite booster is the Pharaoh Amps Class A Booster. http://www.pharaohamps.com/class.htm
This is a relatively unknown company, but it's a great product. Mine has only one knob on it for "volume" - it's very similar to the SD Pickup Booster.

I'd like to see & hear one of RID's boosters. Bring it on RID - promote your goods!

You definately do NOT want to use a Boss EQ for boosting - for all of the reasons mentioned earlier - plus the fact that Boss pedals suck the life out of your tone.

Other quality boosters include:
Klon Centaur (pricey and adds some mids)
Fulltone Fat Boost (realtively inexpensive and tweakable)
ZVex Super Hard On (I just got one of these it's incredible)

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

I use a GE-7. It does the trick but it does add some background hiss and does colour your tone a bit. Not too bothered since its taken me through my gigs without hassle. Maybe one day will get something better.

Re: Best Value For Money Boost?

i used to use a klon, great pedal but pricey. as a pure signal boost the duncan pup booster is great. remember that any boost must be put into a clean amp to get a volume boost. if you run it into a dirty amp youll get more overdrive but not much extra volume.
