If you can find a can, Citristrip antique stripper worked great for me. It's citrus based, so it's a little more gentle on the wood. Just spray it on, wait an hour, and scrub it off. I had to do it twice to remove all the paint, but there was very little sanding left. It's really messy, though, and you'd better make sure it's fairly warm where you are doing it. Luke Duke tried to use it outside last February and the cold kept it from making a dent in the paint.
I won't guarantee it will work on other types of paint, but it worked on the paint on my peavey. And it's only 3 or 4 dollars, so it's worth a shot (at least to me it was).
