hi
I was playing with an EMG85 and I would like to find a pickup which can give me the same sensations

without an active pickup
it's for the bridge position

neck will be sh1, sh2, doug aldrich's pickup or other bluesy sound

but for the bridge position
i don't think a sh4 is perfect so i look for a pickup which
can be more blues and with more dynamic than the sh4
does it exist?

I am talking about the bond between 3 notes when i am playing fast
or when playing a scale quickly or just with one string
i like the dynamic between the notes
I wish I had the same feeling that EMG 85 but not necessarily the same sound because i can not find it bluesy enough

it's just for heavy metal-metal for me

so, i would like a pickup with alnico but with more dynamic than the sh4 to sound like an EMG pickup if you want and maybe a brighter sound too
but without the metal side

when you think an EMG 85 is not a powerful pickup ; it's just an active one
when the sh4 is not active but it has 16k

this would be for a les paul :) studio

i think there must be a pickup between active/passive
or the new one which is not active but has the same sounds
i don't know the name

It's the passive EMG line. I have EMG HZ H3 pickups in my Charvel right now and they sound great. They're not super hot but are very clear and articulate clean and dirty. Nice and tight sound too.

It's not complicated, it's just not very articulate. There's no need for a new thread. Unless you delete this one. No sense having multiple threads about the same thing.


You haven't said what you don't like about the SH-4, just that it's 16K?

Suitable answers have been given; Custom5, 59, Norton, ToneZone, etc.

Those would be a fair match for an EMG 85.

Try the Gibson 57 Classics.

I have to ask if the user has played a JB, or whether they are judging by the resistance and magnet?

I might throw a wolfetone marshallhead out as another option. Definitely dynamic and lively. Does not sound like an EMG at all, but then again, I think there is something of a contradiction in what is requested.

I know it is high output and triple ceramic, but a black winter is dynamic and articulate as well. I have not tried it, but a pegasus might be another good choice.

Alternative8. It's very articulate, dynamic, fun to drive, and leaves no funny aftertaste or residual odors.

And while I've never been a fan of the tone of a JB (at least with a 500K volume), I can't say it lacked dynamics. It definitely responds well to picking intensity. Try a 250K volume pot on your JB (if you have one in the guitar already).

Or, try an EMG HZ-3. I do like that pickup, especially with the optional AfterBurner circuit on about 3. It's no slouch, for sure.

i just want to know if there are better pickups than 490r and 498t for my guitar which is a les paul shred floyd rose

i would like a neck pickup a little bit brighter (even if can add some electronics, bumble bee or other orange drop like people said)
capacitors and other things
so, it's for blues but to approach a les paul standard or custom les paul or reissue, gold top lol

because my guitar is not a les paul standard, so i can have another sound too close to a standard
so, maybe a paf boosted to change from the classic SH1

i already have a sh1 and i know it
sh2 seems not to have a fat sound for fast playing
classic 57 : i know it a little bit

i think i would like a c57 which can shred or a sh2 with more "b...."

and for the bridge position, i need more sustain, fast feedback (i haven't that at this time )
and a lot of harmonics
i know the sh4 but it can not be good for blues too
and sh6 (the solution ?)

If you are saying the JB is dark, I would look at my pots first as a JB should not really be dark. I'd spend the $20 and put in some 500k CTS. Then, I would reevaluate. I might look at the wolfetone marshallhead if you want a hot paf. While unpotted, they are not prone to unwanted feedback, but it is pretty easy to get feedback if you so desire.

very warm blues sound in the neck
for the bridge position, i like the dynamic that i had with the emg 85 but it's not blues

i must quote Steve Hackett because he has a guitar with floyd rose : i have not a sustainer but i look for this kind of sounds
harmonics+sustain+octave like Satriani too

sh4 is dark with alder
dark with maple
always dark lol but i think Seymour Duncan knows that better than any other man

with distorsion, it's great but not always : with maple i have good results
and not with alder

Sh4 is not what most people refer to as dark with alder.

Have you ever played a JB? Because, as someone who has used them fairly routinely for a decade and a half, they are a bright, high mid focused humbucker. The common complaint is too shrill. I am doubting if you have played one from this, because it makes no sense. Claiming it is dark with maple is just weird. Something is broken if a JB is dark in maple.
