Biasing Question

I just bought a Tungsol 6V6GT and a Tungsol 12AX7 for a Fender Champion 600, I plan on taking a listen to the amp with the stock tubes then swapping it out with the new Tungsol. See what the difference will be.

Question, since there is only one preamp tube and one power amp tube would I have to bias the amp? I've never really had to do this. The only reason I'm doing it to this one is because it doesn't seem like it would be that hard.

Re: Biasing Question

Because you only have one power tube. This leads me to think this is a single ended Class A amp. In that case it is Cathode biased. What does this mean? It means your amp has no bias adjustment. I'll google your amp to be sure, And correct my post if I'm wrong. So your O.K. to swap tube's without worring about bias.:D

A common misconception. Cathode biasing is somewhat self limiting, so it's less likely to blow its tube, maybe. It does not really mean the tube doesn't have to be rebiased or at least checked. If the tube is quite different from the original, the bias could be way off. If you know a tech who could give it a quick measure, that would be best.

Re: Biasing Question

I would just go for it. Most fenders arn't that bias pickey.. My Pro Junior doesn't even have a Matched pair of tubes..

Re: Biasing Question

Thanks for the tips guys, unfortunatly I'll be getting my tubes before my amp. Apperently musiciansfreind has the Champ 600 on order, I won't get it until Aprox July 10th.....bummer, I'll have the tubes later this week. Oh well at least it'll get here.
