Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

classic stack + bridge model in the neck, classic stack middle in the middle. totally can be wired that way. you'll need to split the bridge and middle pups to keep it humcancelling

So is the Classic stack a single coil tone or a stacked humbucker? Is the wiring complex to get it hum cancelling when splitting the bridge to get that position 2 tones?

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

jb - awesome toneful p/up, but ain't no PAF and is picky about guitars...
C5 - could work
CC - could be what you're looking for
SH5 - not even remotely PAFish, and suffers from ceramic syndrome
Allan Holdsworth - haven't tried it
Norton - haven't tried it
Air Zone - very versatile and cleans up great but doesn't have the personality of the others

i'd get a CC and try an A5 in it if you want more cut; if still no joy you could check out an AZ... there's plenty of good opinions here, you're not short of options. good luck

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

My buddy puts the CC in all his start type guitars and loves it! He says nothing is smoother and richer than the CC in his strats. Now, another friend said the Rio BBQ kills his CC so who knows! We are all different.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Jeremy, looks like I am getting a used WCR Godwood off a friend and might put that in my Strat. I will still do the Duncan singles. Do the classic stacks come in black? I see the Classic stack plus but don't see a classic stack pickup.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Sounds great and almost 10K! Sounds like it can do a ton of styles well....plus I won't have to pay an arm and a leg for a WCR Godwood which was another choice I had.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

if you have the choice, get trem spaced but it doesnt matter all that much.

the classic stack + is a stacked humbucker that sounds very much like a vintage single coil. it is easy to split with the humbucker.

the bbq is a fat sounding pup but not one that i like, it does one trick well and i need more than that.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Jeremy, the PATB-3 I am getting is a Trembucker so I am good.
Are you sure it doesn't matter if it is trem spaced? A guy is selling me his old JB but he has no idea if it is trem spaced.

I am going to compare the PATB-3, air Zone, CC and BBQ. I'll post results and clips! I hear a lot of guys say the BBQ is like a better JB and that is why I never went back to the JB but have been tempted. On the CC, I talked to a guy who said it lacks a good top end, lacks some clarity the other Customs have. Although I have a friend who swears by the CC.

Sounds nice though!

Jeremey, what would be a good matching noiseless Duncan single set for neck and middle?

Hey, that's my video!

Erm, I have just the standard "Classic Stack Plus STK-S4'. Its noiseless, though I find its not as 'stratty' as it was before, hence why I was hesitant to answer the comment because, while I have those pickups in there, I'm not all that impressed by them.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Very nice tone sin your video.

What are the newer Duncan noiseless singles that came out in the last few years? I forget the name but they were suppoised to be better than Kinmans.

I know Dimarzio has some nice noiseless singles.

LP, Marshall, work the Volume and Tones, yes, it can get very convincing of a PAF. IMO and in most players opinions, the Custom is sort of the exception to the ceramic rule.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

This is interesting. I just got the fat strat and the stock Pearly Gates(not plus) sounds pretty nice!

Jeremy, any thought on the Patb-3 compared to a PGs in a rosewood strat?

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

This is what the ToneWizard recommends for a fat strat with rosewood board. A tech friend recommended Pearly Gates with SSL-1 singles.

Bridge 1 SH-1B '59 Model
Bridge 2 APH-1B Alnico II Pro
Neck 1 Antiquity Strat Texas Hot
Neck 2 SSL-2 Vintage Flat
Middle 1 SVR-1 Vintage Rails
Middle 2 SSL-1 Vintage Staggered

Uh? In a trem Strat the Pearly Gator is definitely better than the APH.

And rosewood or maple board is far less important than the question of tremolo versus hardtail. This application needs work.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Thanks, what do you mean this application needs work? Well, I do like the PG in this Strat so it might stay. I am going to try a CC, a JB and Rio BBQ for kicks but I think the PG may stay. The PG is supposed to be bright but it seems warm in this guitar.
