Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Anyone know why there are so many versions of the Blues Scaraseno Parallel Axix humbucker? There is the PATB-1, 2 and 3! One is for metal, but the others appear to be same!

There is only one version of Blues Trembucker which would be the PATB-3 , the 1 & 2 are not his signature pickups.

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

Please forgive me guys for bumping this thread, however this is a great read and perfect for my situation. I have a 1983 Fender SQ strat, plays great and is very resonant and alive feeling and sounding. My tech is going route out the bridge single cavity for a humbucker.

I love thick, rich, 3-D, juicy full tone from the bridge bucker.

What the heck is "ceramic syndrome"? I have owned the Duncan Custom and PRS Dragon, both of which are ceramic. They are awesome.

I may have my tech set it up for splitting.
So, the.pickups I am looking at now are the following:

Duncan Custom Custom
Duncan Brobucker
Duncan custom/59 hybrid
Duncan Blues Scaracino
Dimarzio Air Zone
Dimarzio Andy Timmons
Dimarzio Gravity Storm
Rio Grande BBQ

Re: Big fat sounding humbucker for Strat bridge

I want something that sounds big and fat with balls and good sustain, while still having a warm, slightly PAFish quality about it. I sort of liked the JB Jr as far as the output was concerned, so I would like the output a little on the med/high side.

I would also like a pickup with an alnico magnet. It doesn't have to be alnico, but I prefer it, as I think that the ceramic magnet in the JB Jr may have a lot to do with why I think it sounds "fake" to me.

If you are going to go for a whole set, here is what i would recommend:
custom custom bridge - strat pickup in the middle - jazz neck = H/s/H
Wire it up with a 3 way switch so its essentially a 2 humbucker guitar. humbuckers generally play best with other humbuckers due to wiring and pot values etc. Use push pull pots so the cc and the jazz can be split.
Master volume and tone knobs for the 2 hums.

Use the 3rd knob as a volume control for the strat pickup in the middle so you can blend it in to get those "in between sounds". No tone knob for the middle, but this will add chime and jangle to the mid pickup so it can hang with the humbuckers (either split or otherwise) giving you some really clear stratty tones.
I reckon that will cover everything you are looking for and more.

if the CC is too warm in the bridge, it will accommodate and sound good with any magnet swap you can think of so you can get exactly the right amount of "chug" vs warmth.

Just using the 3 way will give you a really simple and fast killer sounding versatile axe without using the middle pickup. The mid pickup volume knob and the coil taps give you a myriad of extra sounds if you want them.

Sounds (basic with the 3 way):
CC bridge
cc bridge and jazz neck
jazz neck

more sounds (using the taps and the middle pup volume):
cc bridge split
cc Bridge and strat middle
cc bridge split and strat middle
strat middle
cc bridge split and jazz neck
cc bridge split and jazz neck split
jazz neck split
jazz neck and strat middle
jazz neck split and middle.

A lot of people like the Rio BBQ, and the Anderson H3. The new Dimarzio Gravity storm is suppose to sound fatter then the Breed. And the Invader.
