Big head, small cab

Nothing like a project to take my mind off troubles, working for a 'boss' after self employment over 25 years, and recently, my dad's declining health. I like to make stuff, or restore stuff, or just tinker. It shifts my focus and clears my head, for the moment. We did a gig at a small club, my Bogner 1/2 stack about 8 feet away, facing directly at my other guitarists 100 watt VHT rig. Yeah, talk about tight. The sound levels on stage were not bad really, and we adjusted the PA mains accordingly. It was packed, the crowd dug the music, so did the bar staff and we got invited back. My other guitarist has a slew of boutique amps and some nice combos, he's bringing a Dr Z. My sound is dialed into my Alchemist, I don't have any small cabs, but my friend did have a Bogner cube he said I could use...kool...until I saw how tiny this 'cube' was. Looked like a freakin' 'bad robot' with a big head.:eyecrazy: BUT, this tiny bugger sounds great! It's got 2 round ports and is stuffed with some kind of batting. Not killer huge like my 4 12 Celestion mix cab, but sounds full, rich and a lot bigger than it looks. I don't wanna use that cube with my head balancing on the cube handle, so I decide to build a cab to surround this tiny cube, so my head can sit nicely on top. I have left over acid green tolex from my Marshall cab recover so I cover the 'box' with it. I make a 'riser' bottom so the cube tilts upwards for me to hear better. I think it may sound bigger inside this box, at least I hope so. Was fun to build, kinda copied the Avatar style, I get to use it Friday night...yes, that's my newest axe, Heritage 150P, thanks to bbrent for the inside scoop. It's a LP with Poplar body, nice light weight and a nice brightness on top of it's LP crunch, the Duncans really made this one sing. The HC reviews made me realize this is a sleeper that I need.:naughty: I love it. I have the Marshall logo that came off my 4 12 cab...I may stick it on this, just for giggles.

Re: Big head, small cab

Butnut you've got style bro!! I knew I'd smile if I opened your post.

Nice to hear that you had a great gig. That's always good for the soul :)

Re: Big head, small cab

Well done, very stylish I might add.

What keeps the Bogner cabinet stationary when transporting the lime green shell? Do you disassemble the Bogner from the shell when transporting?

Re: Big head, small cab

butnut .... what's with the Heritage? ... it appears to have no major mods!!!!!!???? :D

Re: Big head, small cab

hehe, thanks guys. The cube is stuffed in the open back at the gig. The bigger cab is empty, weighs less than my LP and case, I can carry the cube and cab with 2 hands easy. I won't know about the dub grille until Friday, I plan the drop the E609 inside the 'fake cab' on the Bogner grille anyway. Totally Stevo! I have the best bandmates, great players and kool bros, we have fun! Hey Curly, these days, changin' pups and maybe some plastics are all I do...my Tele-moddin' extreme days are behind me...maybe one day. Thanks Hoss!

Re: Big head, small cab

Great camoflage bro' :D

Do you know what kind of speaker is in that "cube"? The small size is really interesting...

Cheers,

Chip

Re: Big head, small cab

Thanks guys. Chip, I believe it came with a V30, but my friend told me he put a Classic Lead 80 in...I have one of those in my 4-12 cab....sounds great. I may decide to make this a 'real' cab with 2-12s, just need to make a speaker board and rear 1/2 cover....for now, this cube will do fine.

Re: Big head, small cab

Very nice work!

Looks great and i`m sure sounds even better!

Aloha to you! Must be great living in Hawaii--I lived there twice [actually born at Tripler on Oahu!]

Re: Big head, small cab

Hawaii has it's good and bad, the economy is in bad shape here, real tough all around, we're struggling to keep afloat. Summers coming, it's hot and humid now, the beach sounds good. Tripler eh....da pink hospital! Thanks bro...can't wait to hear this cube at gig levels...

Re: Big head, small cab

Did the gig, got a lot of props from the crowd, lots of dancin' and singin' along, we're getting tighter and havin' a ball. I almost hate to say it, that cube sounds better than my 4-12! :foot: hehe, even my other guitarist told me it sounds killer. The sound is tight, focused and very punchy. I do feel that the cube being inside a bigger box, with a fully open back against a brick wall added something to make this single 12 sound huge. I love it, I may have to buy it from my buddy now....
