Big Question (Active vs Passive)

Live I would probably favor my emg loaded axe over anything with passives. Recording/ practicing however is a different story. I don't like how emgs sound on cd usually, apart from tight rhtyhm sounds(which you will NOT get with passives). With my music I usually favor emg 85 for any especially fast or chunky rhythm parts and my schecter for open chord and lead parts. emgs sound quite whiny and sterile for drawn out leads IMO but it's harder to tell with fast runs.

EMG's imo sound just as good as any other pickup when you record them. The only thing you really shouldn't do is play through a digital amp or digital pedal and record straight to tape. You definately want some tube saturation in the mic pre or the amp itself. Other than that EMG's sound great on cd's.

Re: Big Question (Active vs Passive)

I've been recently trialing out EMG pickups in a mate's guitar and they do sound a lot meatier than the set in mine. The pickup models are the same 60/81 but they have a completely different sound which I think is due to the mahogany neck/body in my guitar. I'm noticing my style is even changing while playing this new guitar. It seems to relish in blues style playing whereas I'm used to playing metal/ minor modes and scales on my Ibanez RG570. Do you think that it's plausible that the pickups don't complement the wood and if so what are some opinions of good bridge passives for a mahogany/ebony package?

PS. So bottom line to all, both pickups are good but complement diiferent styles and different songs.

It should be like 1000 hours playing before someone should change one. That dude must leave his guitar in the cold.

Or plays some VERY long gigs! :laugh2:

You must be ignoring the fact that they sound bad for quite awhile... kinda like blaming your engine locking up on the fact that your oil went bad :)
