Biggest issues you've faced as a guitar/bass player?

Re: Biggest issues you've faced as a guitar/bass player?

I'm never going to make it as a big star but I know enough to play in church and things like that. Like others I have no drive to be any more proficient than I already am. There are some things I want to learn but I need someone to teach them to me so that I know I'm learning proper technique, etc...

I play jazz, so I haven't seen an audience in years, and I can't use my talent to attract women.

If you're proficient at jazz, is it a simple matter to play less demanding genres? Would you not want to either way?

Sometimes I lose the ability to play super fast like I typically do, and my ring finger is not as strong as the others, so it sorta holds me back in some ways. When playing complicated clean parts, sometimes my fingers miss frets and I miss notes, or they tend to trip over each other. Sure, it takes practice, but it annoys the crap out of me sometimes.

Yeah, sometimes I get good days when I could outshred Vivian Campbell and bad days when I can't even play High Flyer. Finger separation gets effed up sometimes, too.

Having a 'Slashy' tone, while playing some 'Slashy' licks, sometimes even some Slash's songs and then trying to explain that IM NOT A FAN OF SLASH.

The problem is solved now. I just play with much more gain and try to avoid Sweet Child O' Mine riff when playing with others..

OH, I almost forgot. I have an Alnico II PRO Slash humbucker (neck position). And no, I'm not a fan of Slash.

There's the old joke: 'A blues guitarist plays 3 chords for a crowd of 100 people, and a jazz guitarist plays 100 chords for 3 people.'

It's a crazy world we live in eh? I happen to enjoy both, and I'd probably be in both crowds.

I'd rather play for the three that get it.

My biggest challenge is the need to overcome poor muting technique. My leads are accompanied by too much extraneous noise. I will never be a fast player. My hands are old and the joints are getting stiff, but I would still be satisfied with my abilities were it not for the slop.

Lots of great Jazz venues in Boston with full rooms. I can think of a dozen off the top of my head I could hit tonight that will be packed. Berklee always has and always will have a huge influence on the music in this city. You would love the Wonder Bar my old haunt near my old house in town. Go figure a live Jazz venue with women!

For me the tehnique, and more than that keeping it at the same level. One day I could fire chops like George Lynch and day after felt like 10-year-old playing his first guitar for the first time. Would be good to be able to play at the same level, every day. It goes too much with the mood.

Other thing has been trying to find a good combination with details, like strings, picks and stuff that are best for me. Nowadays the string cauge doesn´t matter so much. My strat is loaded with 11´s and soon with 12´s, my main guitar sports 10´s and beater has 9´s. But still I´m searching and changing things without founding the best overall choice.

Honestly,
I would have to say getting back into playing after 20years ( this time with MS, among a couple other health issues ) there is no way around it and I have absolutely NO intentions of letting it stop my progress. I Spent the last 20 years with the "I just can't do it anymore" attitude and that has gotten me nowhere in a hurry. My Wife and I were talking about this very issue last night and I can honestly say I am very glad I decided to jump back in and just have fun!
