Biggest suprise guitars??

This thread is dedicated to guitars youve played or bought that ended up being so much more than you expected!

Ive had 3.
My Japanese Squier strat: Bought for $139 mainly because I wanted a normal strat pickup strat. And I think its one of my fav strats Ive ever played.

My Washburn HM24: Got it on ebay for $299 and it plays great and the neck is silky smooth.. Easily worth twice the price..

Most recently: BC rich gunslinger reissue: buddy of mine bought a hideous yellow one cuz its being discontinued for $449. It plays so easy and is so much fun to play and just oozes 80s with its look and Dim Super D.. I keep making excuses to keep it from him... If only it was black.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My Schecter Tempest special. I bought without pickups so I put a set of Duncan Antiquity P90's in it. My intention was to use it for slide. It sounded so good I decided to use it for a lot of other things as well. The thing is the pickups are as thick as any Humbuckers, so I actually prefer it for many things but not so much for slide. I find that really cheesy guitars with weak pickups tend to work best for slide.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

I'm always amazed when an inexpensive guitar rises above expectations and takes on its own personality. I like seeing them respond to tweaks and upgrades, as they embrace new pickups, hardware, finishes, to find their true voices. I could cite half a dozen examples from my own collection. What I've learned, above anything else, is the importance of improving the acoustic sound of the instrument. Help the guitar resonate better, more freely, and the effort will go miles towards a better-sounding amplified instrument.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

Pretty much anything from the Squier Vintage Modified or Classic Vibe series. Those are some great guitars, and a killer price too!

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My USA Peavey Wolfgang Special. All gold color, I thought it was totally ugly, but for $225 and tax at a pawn shop....had to at least buy it. Now, I think it would be my last to go. I am really enjoying this guitar.

My $80 Squier Strat Affinity. Looks gorgeous, sounds great. It needs fret crowning though.

I bought a LTD EC400AT goldtop at a shop for a great price.. It was awesome! I sold it cuz I prefer the 4 knob setup.. I hate myself for selling it

I've played one of those once. It has jumbo frets and duncans stock. I freakin loved it. Wish I would have had the money to buy it.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

I bought a Simon & Patrick parlor sized acoustic, out of novelty basically. It's funny, but it's celtic like sound, capable of doing blues very well, and small size, has given it the spot of my main guitar when it comes to writing new songs. Sounds very resonant, and full of character.

This might sound strange, but my Gibson SG is a surprise. I bought it as a backup to my PRS, but now they basically share the spotlight, with the PRS maintaining a slight edge. The Gibson just does raw rock and punk best, where the PRS works best for my original music, and for anything that isn't just power chords with a solo in the middle.

The squier jagmaster was also a surprise. She's my beater in every sense of the word. I don't take care of it, I use it when drunk, but she still sounds decent when I'm sober. And yes, it sounds very very good, even compared to mexican fenders. It makes me happy.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

my warmoth telecaster was a HUGE surprise. i've never played much on a tele with a bridge humbucker or one with a p90 in the neck for that matter. this one has both.. sets up easily, light weight, resonant, plays like a $2000 guitar and from what I can count, it cost about 400 to make. KEEPER for sure

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My Squier vintage modified P bass.

I bought it because it was cheap and sounded great through my amp...

a few years later I've been swapping parts on it slowly and I gotta tell you, it's one hell of a bass guitar. dont let the squier name fool ya.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My friend has a Hagstrom Superstrat with a (probably fake) maple cap. It looks gorgeous, is well built hand plays way better than its price tag would ever suggest.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My £100 Epi SG '65 model. Bought it to just throw some pick ups in and use as a beater.... it's a gigging machine now!

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My OLP MM1 (EBMM Axis copy) - even with the stock pickups it was nice. I am rebuilding it to be more of a P-90 guitar now.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My biggest surprise after a few years as a loyal Les Paul player, is that they just don't fit me. Teles make my hand feel more at home.

My G&L ASAT Special Tribute is the big shocker...i've gotten more compliments about that guitar's sound than any other.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

Epi's are surprisingly good overall. But looks we have a winner here: the vintage modified series from Squier.

My tele is simply amazing.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

There's a Squier vintage vibe tele at GC for $279. Are you guys sayin that's a good guitar?

It looks amazing.

Re: Biggest suprise guitars??

My Tokai MIJ LP. Not becouse it's 'as good as a Gibson' but becouse it made me realise that I actually rather like playing LP's, something about where it hangs on strap makes it easier to play while singing than strats. I really can't think of a reason I'd get rid of it.
