Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

His vintage Jr's are all stock I believe and most of his new ones are stock a well be them loaded with P-90's or P-100's...his Signature guitar has a special humbucking P-90 in it.

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

I'm curious to know if he uses any Duncan Custom Shop/Custom Wound P90's. I feel that he would since he's used the SH-4 JB all these years in his "Blue" guitar... hes stepped into the world of Seymour Duncan before :)

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

He plays stock Gibson P-90s on his vintage Juniors.

The Gibson signature juniors he put out had stacked Gibson H-90s.

And...they sounded like poo. You could do some late-90's early 2000's pop-punk but definitely not classic punk/rock/rockabilly.

Nothing beats a REAL dogear.

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

Yeah the H90 doesn't sound very good in my BJa Les Paul Jr. :(. What would be a good replacement that's closer to his sound?

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

I had a white Billie Joe Jr.

I also had a VOS '57 tv model junior.

Just get a real P90 off of gibson's website or eBay. Get some bumblebee capacitors for the tone pot.

Also, Those old juniors had massive necks. They are literally baseball bats. The BJ junior has a slim taper 60's neck. Affects the sound dramatically. But if you crank up enough Marshall gain...you shouldn't notice. Still won't get you 21st century breakdown though.

He uses a lot of old Gretch's with filtertrons, and a Fender Esquire, both are twangy.

Re: Billie Joe Armstrong P 90's?

I really doubt it would make that big of a difference, when you crank it, especially for that kind of music. He has a good tone but it's more about the vocals than anything. Even the regular guitar center les paul juniors sound pretty good. You need a good noise gate though, the hum will kill you.

Green Day was one of the first bands I tried to copy when I started playing and like 8 years ago, all I had were humbucker guitars with alnico v's. They sounded close enough.

Plus on their live stuff, Jason Freese contributes a lot to the overall sound, and he plays all sorts of guitars.
