BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Here's a quick demo of the BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive. It's my Strat into an Ulbrick Venue 30, running clean at home levels. This is a beautifully dynamic low gain pedal, originally designed to emulate a Supro. I've played a few seconds of the pedal bypassed so you have a point of reference when the pedal kicks in. I really like this one, it gets a little Tweedish at times, which is ironically no mean feat in a pedal.

Very nice Geoff!

I've heard a few nice Honey Bee clips but nobody ever gets into the feel of the pedal w/ me...how does it feel as a player??

It's ALIVE, Christian! Possibly the most dynamic and touch sensitive overdrive pedal I've ever played, and certainly one of those pedals that makes you want to just keep playing. I've deliberately put some light and shade in the demo, playing similar lines with varying intensity. If there was another way to say 'amp like' without saying 'amp like' I would say it, but I can't think of one, so I will just say that it's 'amp like.'

I think you might like this one Niels, it's not a clone or new improved version of anything, it's its own beastie and it has a lot of character, but will be respond to players who exercise light and shade. The Nature control is interesting...it doesn't do anything to the top end, instead it provides a kind of flabby, saggy Tweed bottom end in the counter-clockwise position, which is gradually removed as you turn the control clockwise, to become a tighter, more focused bottom end. Not a bad idea, and very effective in practice. Changes the whole character of the pedal...even though it's trying to be a Supro, the Nature control is like winding through the history of Fender combos, at least from the 1950's to the 1970's!

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Very tasty... the pedal itself is clean, not noisy at all. I'd love to hear a humbucker through there.

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Wow, that's really beautiful tone Geoff. It's really does suit the dynamics in your playing... I went to work smiling yet again mate, awesome stuff.

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

It's certainly a good trick that this pedal does. The amp is nowhere near breaking up, so that's really all the sound of the pedal. That leaves a lot of scope for using it to add to an amp on the verge, or to give another texture to a clean amp, in between clean and say, a rock crunch. It also does some pretty amazing stuff to OD pedals placed before it in the chain, which is kind of unexpected. It really does have that small combo amp breakup vibe to it, which is a great sound for placement in a mix, before things get too fizzy. A keeper for sure.

Very very nice sounding! It definitely sounds amp like to me. Did you use your Heil mic again?

Thanks....yes, always the Heil PR-30. It suits the amps I use better than any other mic I've heard.

I usually don't like the sound of overdrive pedals, but I really like the sounds you're getting out of that thing Geoff!

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Well, you've done it Geoff. That sound has haunted me and I pulled the plunge. If I can make one sound half as good as you have I'll consider it a success :)

Cool, I hope you like it. All I would suggest is not to expect too much gain, it's definitely a low gain pedal, and also to experiment with pushing the volume on the pedal in combination with the gain...the volume from the pedal pushes the front end of an amp in a very musical way. The rest is all in your picking hand dynamics, because this pedal responds better to that than any other pedal I've heard. Looking forward to your response when it arrives!

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Well, sort of related to the honey bee, I got a the Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive. I've wrapped it up already but I've heard that both pedals are quite awesome, amp-like, and very touch sensitive.

Have you compared the two by any chance?

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Very nice! Have you tried a Timmy? Have would that compare..?

I haven't played through a Sweet Honey, but I've only heard good things about them. I listened to a couple of comparison demos on YT for what they're worth and ended up leaning toward the Honey Bee, but I don't think you can go wrong with either if the general territory of these pedals is something that appeals to you.
