BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

Very nice! Have you tried a Timmy? Have would that compare..?

Hey Tor, yes, I've had a Timmy on my main board for a couple of years now, and it's not going anywhere! Quite different from the Honey Bee in that the Timmy is incredibly transparent, and can be set up to impart very little colour of its own, while still providing a beautiful low gain overdrive. Timmy is really like running back to your amp and giving your input gain a nudge, but in a pedal, which is a valuable thing to have. The Honey Bee has a very distinctive colour of its own, and imparts some of the attractive characteristics of a driven Supro, Tweed Fender or early Ampeg combo. Not for everybody, but certainly an interesting alternative to the TS or Plexi styled voicing in an overdrive.

Re: BJFE Honey Bee Overdrive

I have loved nearly every clip and video of the HBOD and SHOD. I have just not found one without a wait time I could live with within the price range I have been willing to pay. I do have a JHS Open Natural which is basically a HBOD and SWOD combined switched via toggle. If the HBOD is nicer than this is is VERY, VERY cool indeed.

Cool, I hope you like it. All I would suggest is not to expect too much gain, it's definitely a low gain pedal, and also to experiment with pushing the volume on the pedal in combination with the gain...the volume from the pedal pushes the front end of an amp in a very musical way. The rest is all in your picking hand dynamics, because this pedal responds better to that than any other pedal I've heard. Looking forward to your response when it arrives!

Sounds perfect to me. I like pedals that respond to your pick attack and I'm specifically looking for a light overdrive to do R.E.M. and Tom Petty-ish kinda stuff through my AC-15 (I'll keep the Bogner around for the heavier rock and roll stuff). While I like that the Crowther Hot Cake is pretty responsive, it does have a hard clip circuit and I'm really looking forward to the soft clip sounds I've heard of the Honey Bee.

^ sweet score. Similar experience with my hot cake and hard clipping. Looking forward to your review of the honeybee.
