Black Friday, Black Lester

Did something I've never done before. Bought a guitar on a whim.

Went to my local L&M. No real specials on new stuff, but they were blowing out the used stuff. Got this 2011 Studio for $400 CDN (about 350 USD).

A little buckle rash and a couple of dings on the bottom. It was strung with incredibly thick strings (wound G) and tuned down to C# (must ne a metal tuning). Must be why it never moved. Anyway a set of tens, a tweak to the truss rod, some oil on the board and an intonation adjustment or two later, I present my poor man's Black Beauty.

Just couldn't resist at the price. As a quick review, the fretwork is excellent. Lowered the strings to where I like them, not a buzz all the way up the neck.

As for the neck, it's a thick 50s, which I've never had before (my standard has the 2008 version asymmetrical). Quite comfy. The fretboard should be grandililo (sp) given the vintage, but it sure looks like rosewood to me (pores, colour, grain, etc.). Whatever it is, I like it.

Pickups (have to discuss this on the SD forum!) are, I believe, the ubiquitous 490/498 set. Never had a set before. They're fine, probably won't stay forever, but will do for now. They actually sound pretty good with a mid-gain setting, very 70s rock. The guitar is chambered (doesn't bother me, so is my Standard), easy on the back. Sounds like a Les Paul to me.

Like I said at the start, I've never bought a guitar spontaneously like this. Price was too good to pass up. I'll post pics in a few minutes, they're on my iPad.

Re: Black Friday, Black Lester

Thanks, guys. Just glad I had some cash in my pocket when I went into the store.

Re: Black Friday, Black Lester

Looks like a great deal to me... You could flip it for twice of what you paid, if you wanted to. A lot of people swap the black plastic for cream to give it more of a LP Standard look.

Re: Black Friday, Black Lester

Noice score... it looks to be in very good condition. To think that they could have charged several hundred more dollars if they had just set it up...

Thanks, everyone. I'm really loving it. Wait a couple of months for the "What SD pickups for my LP Studio?" thread!

Yeah, although, they took it on a trade, probably sold the new one at full retail and were happy to break even (or a little less) rather than put time and effort into it. I'm happy they felt that way, anyway!

It helps that over the last year I've decided to get more knowledgable/confident in doing my own setups. Otherwise I would have had to factor that cost into the purchase, too.

Congrats! Those pups get a bad rap. If you spend some time with the tone controls, and balance the volumes between the two pups, you can get some really nice tones out of them.

Not Duncan Antiquity nice, but very serviceable. As you said, 70s rock.

Yeah, I'm in no rush. They are quite fun, actually, and a nice contrast to my other guitars. I'm never in too much of a rush to change out pickups unless they are total garbage. Getting more and more into guitar setups also makes me want to experiment more with polepiece height, etc.

But no, not at the magnet swapping stage yet!
