black metal effects/eq?

Re: black metal effects/eq?

I had the Digitech Metal Master and wish i had keep it, damn that was a good pedal! :smack:

I got a very good emulation of Burzums guitar sound of the Filosofem album with the pedal.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

thanks for all the advice so far!
the metal master pedal sounds pretty good. i've narrowed it down to two choices: The Metal Zone and the Metal Master, the Metal Zone looks to be better, with extra distortion, and mid frequency adjustment.
what do you guys think?

Re: black metal effects/eq?

If you ask me, i think the Metal Zone is :censored:

If you wanna play Black Metal, you just can't go wrong with the Digitech!

Re: black metal effects/eq?

yeah i guess your right, i've been reading reviews of the Metal Zone and Metal Master all over the web, and pretty much all of them say you cant go wrong with the Digitech.
Finally! i've decided i'm going to get the Metal Zone. Cheers for all the advice!

Re: black metal effects/eq?

just be careful. digital = compression = bad. Try it out first, or make sure you can send it back

Well, just becauee a company calls themself "Digitech" does not mean that everything they make is 100% full digital. IIRC the Metal Master is an analogue pedal like most Digitach fuzzboxes....

Though I don´t agree with your assessment of digital technology, either ;)

Re: black metal effects/eq?

I would do in your case a 5150 (Plus if you want an eq on the rhythm channel) and a Marshall 1960A or B cabinet.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

No expert about Black Metal... (I even don't know most of the bands you have named here)... but (and I hope this helps)
I read in a Boss advertising magazine that a good rig for really heavey metal is using this rig: compressor -> distortion -> EQ pedal -> flanger -> reverb that splits the signal to two amps. If you use a distrotion pedal with bass/mid/treble controls, I think you can do w/o the EQ pedal. You can use a Tube Screamer instead of the compressor, and I think that a flanger "jet woosh" is an amazing touch for some extreme metal parts.

Don't only think about distortion and overdrive pedals for heavy metal... with the right amp you might get by without one... delays, reverbs, compressors, and even modulation effects are also part of the story, and they do make it more interesting to listn to.

This is a false statement. Compression has nothing to do with quantizing an analog signal to the digital domain. If you have insufficient bit depth, then you may have to boost the analog signal strength to maintain proper levels after conversion, but the price of digital chips capable of 24 bit or higher encoding is so low now that they're being used all over the place. I'd be very surprised to find that a decent 24 bit digital signal is audibly discernable between an analog one.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

there isn't a sure formula for the black metal tone, i'm using a Fender Telecaster for it + i don't use pedals- plug straight in to amp...

I agree with this. People always think I'm joking if I recommend moderate-output pickups for them when they have a super high-gain amp. For a good heavy tone, everything doesn't have to be FULL BLAST.

But my favorite heavy distortion is the Boss Mega Distortion. It has 2 gain stages, each controlled by a different knob. One knob sounds more like a rock distortion, the other sounds more like overdrive, and the mixture gets heavier than the Metal Zone. But in contrast to most Boss distortions, it stays smooth no matter how you set the 2 distortion knobs and the 2 tone knobs.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

Well you can generalize and typically for a an extreme black metal tone you'll want very gainy mids and highs with just a little low end. Black metal isn't typically a palm mute and chug a chug genre. Lots of tremolo picking and speed that needs to cut through. As stated there are a lot of exceptions but a lot of the time this is what you'll find. You could even think to add a touch of delay or reverb for a little more shill and cold-ness in tone.

Bands like early Emperor, Abigor, Dark Funeral, Satryricon, Dissection, Dodheimsgard etc. really embodied this type of sound.

Crap... this thread is two years old, ah well.

you're better off with an amp with good on-board distortion than searching for the perfect pedal.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

I didn't realize this thread was so old. Well, anyways blizzard beast, it would be best to try out a few different ones and see which is closest to the one you are looking for. ...Hello? ...blizzard beast, are you there? ...
