Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

It is surprisingly light, closer to a SGs feel than a Les Paul. Dean had to stop making these because Zack Wylde was under contract with Gibson when he had these built.

Does Gibson make them now or no? I'm sure I could find a used one if I really wanted one but I want to know if their is anybody making a body similar to the splittail or would I have to go custom shop route.

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

That's how I dial my Recto in. One odd thing about it though, the presence control on the third channel works more like a second mid control than a normal presence control. I don't know if it's been modded or what.

Whoa man...I don't even know what to say about that one. When you roll off the presence, what does it sound like?? You can call Boogie and they will spend all day A/B'ing sounds with you and chat with you about your tone if you want. I'm not sure there are any "legal" or Mesa approved mods that can be done there, so they would be a great help.

ALSO:

Rockstar man!!!! I'm psyched your Winter is working out for you. I LOVE these pickups!!! If you are even remotely thinking about getting the matching neck pickup DO IT. You will totally $h!t when you hear it.

I just love the way these things feel under my fingers.

The neck pickup has numbers much lighter than the bridge pickup. Is there a pretty clean sound out of the neck pickup before cranking or including pedal gain/distortion? The whole model seems like a real winner but just wondering if there is a contrast between the neck sound and bridge sound? Thanks!

Gibson stopped making them, I think Dean did a much better job with them all around.

What's all this talk about harsh lead sounds? I can NOT have that going on. Everything else about this pick-up sounds right up my alley, but I definitely cannot deal with a harsh lead tone.

I haven't tried it, but so far it sounds freaking brilliant:

The lead tone is sick bro.

Don't sweat it.

I haven't noticed any harsh tones in my set. Granted I didn't like them in my Explorer, but love them in my JS King V. The neck is crystal clear, although not as bluesy as a Pearly Gates. But for metal solos and stuff that you want to be very clean and clear, the BWn nails it.

And it's a God damn shame 'cuz Dean KILLED IT with these!

Good, that better be the case. I'm thinking about matching the bridge and getting a set of them. How is the Neck pick-up?

The neck pickup will make you $h!t yourself.

Whatever you need it to be...it's there for you. Metal...rock...blues...jazz. I don't understand how they did it but they did it.

You will just not believe how they react to the volume knob.

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

Late last week I had the time to wire in the 500K pots and .047uf Orange Drop cap. It really opened up the top end, although I may try a smaller cap later on. It sounded better through the Blues Jr than before, but still not quite as good as a single coil guitar, but it is a Fender amp after all, so it was no doubt voiced for single coils. I won't have a chance to run it through the Mesa until next practice though.

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

I'm gonna have to go with Gone_Shootin on the Explorer, I played with them live on Saturday and my Les Paul with the Seths just destroyed it. It's just lacking a certain crunch I want.

I'm gonna try them in my SG, see how that goes.

I just hear an acquaintance of mine in my head yelling T-Toooooooooooooooooooops!!! \m/,

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

Ok,

so I finally got around to getting my Black Winter loaded guitar working. Before I continue this review I need give you a background.

Guitar is a PRS se custom 22 (closest thing to one, it's actually a Billy Martin sig)

It has a mahognay body and neck, and a rosewood fretboard. I have the pickups installed with 250k pots, so I really haven't tapped their full potential yet.

My thoughts so far:

The rumors are true, the bridge pickup is quite articulate. It has a pretty fast attack, too. The 250k pots are definitely masking it's treble frequencies, and while that's disappointing, it tells me a lot about this pickup. It's got only a little less treble detail compared to my guitar with an A8 '59/Custom hybrid- which has 500k pots. That tells me the pickup is going to be just what I wanted with 500k pots.
As is- I was whipping out some pretty awesome doom sounds, I played Bury Me in Smoke by Down and it was damn close to the same tone.

The neck pickup to me is basically a higher output slighty tweak '59n. It's louder, it's got a hair more treble, and less bass. It's a got a little more authority in the midrange as well, if you get what I mean.

Lucy Diamond isn't blowing smoke about the clean tone, either. Both pickups have a very useable clean tone, and they sound like they would get good split tones as well. It's a pretty loud clean tone, but it's not too in your face.

I will post an update once I'm running them with 500k pots.

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

If you want the Black Winter for impulse responses, and the heaviest tone possible...it's all good. It sounds similar to the SH-4.

These sound files are on different settings.

Re: Black Winter owner.... Feedback so far????

Is anyone getting tired of posting a comment that needs moderator approval only to find the next day, week, etc that it never gets approved?

I had a post that I made yesterday that contained sound files comparing the SH-4 and Black Winter. Maybe I can edit this post and place the links here:
