Black Winter Set in LPC is pretty amazing

Just have to say that the Black Winter set in a Les Paul Custom is really a great setup. Although they are ceramic high gainers they have so many complex nuances and overtones, and work well with the volume knob. They are very much at home in a heavy mohagany body and sound great at standard and drop tunings. Definitely not just a metal pickup! A strange beast actually this pair, they do bring the brutal when requested but can become very well mannered and soulful when desired. What a great wind from SD.

Great info! Been curious to try a set, but worried that they may be too specialized. This and some previous reviews debunk that tho.. Are you able to describe the overtones a bit more? Example of descriptor Im thinking is how some (alot) of Dimarzios have a Wah type of overtone..
Clips???

Fantastic set!! Really underrated. I have them in my schecter KM-6. They sound great for metal stuff but still provide a clean and articulate tone which can be used for a variety of musical styles. Despite of the name and the appearance. They have a cristalline and sharp high end and tight low end. Never muddy under high gain. The neck pickup is perfect for soloing while the bridge pickup is a crushing rhythm machine. I know the Km-6 is a different beast if compared with a LP custom but the tonal differences don't affect the final quality response of these pickups, which is high. I have no doubt they sound great in your LP. The mayhem set is far from them, tonewise, even if someone could state that the black winter set collects the inheritance of the former set IMO.

I've had a set for 2 or 3 years. They are very versatile. They'll do anything from AC/DC to more modern stuff, just lower the gain and/or turn down the guitar volume. The cleans are crystal clear. One of the few humbuckers that can fool you into thinking it's a true single coil when split.

The only guitar I didn't like them in was my Explorer. In that guitar, they took on a half cocked wah/tubby low mid tone. Hated it. But in everything else (Epi LPC, Jackson JS King V, and Ibanez RG421MH), they've been great. They tend to reflect the natural tone of your guitar. They put out what the guitar gives them.

I think the Black Winters tend to do a lot of stuff well, unlike a lot of pickups that are marketed as strictly for high gain. They seem to have a good balance of, well...everything...so if you primarily play heavier music, but like to do other things, too, they are a better choice than most other sets.

Good to know. You're making me want to try them now.

Makes me laugh when people use the fact that a pick-up has a ceramic magnet as a "disclaimer"... Such as: "it has a ceramic magnet *but* it sounds good"...

I blame cheap import pick-ups for this "ceramic is bad" perception. Anyone who's played a SH5 (custom) for more than 5 minutes knows that these can be done right and sound great... There are a bunch of others that prove this too... too bad, people are limiting themselves too much by thinking this way.

I posted a clip of the BW split on here a while back...

The BW sounds awesome split, and their veratility is inspiring! They have a certain p-90-ish sound to them IMO. I really, really like ‘em.

I use 300k volume pots with them though, but I do that on most (all, actually) pickups in the bridge.

the type of magnet does not discriminate how good is a pickup if compared with others. there are A2 pickups that sound well and A2 pickup that sound badly, as well as good ceramic pickups and completely dog ceramic pickups. Sh5 sounds good not because it has a ceramic magnet but because the project is almost perfect. IMO the magnet defines the gradation of sound you want to get. Just like the watercolors: add some water and you can obtain a different shade of the same color (not a different color).

I'm 'm well aware of all that. If you read my post correctly, you'll see that my point is that many players associate "ceramic" with harsh and unpleasant tones, which I believe mostly stems from cheap import pick-ups (usually poorly designed) using ceramic mags for cost-cutting reasons. That's all.
