Black Winter

Re: Black Winter

The wind is not the same. The resonant peak gives that away. I tell you that its coils are more similar to my TT custom shop, brighter than the sh6 and growlier mids. I will do a comparison video of a Black Winter vs the Tyrannotitan when I get around to buying a BW.

sorry bro but I have to raise the bull**** flag. look at the custom, custom custom and custom 5. different resonant peaks while the coils are similar. This is of course logical since the resonant peak is also determined by the magnet and polepieces. Sorry.

I do think these coils are similar and I do think the JB, Distortion SH6 and Invader have coils that are VERY VERY close. I made a JB/Invader hybrid with hex polepieces (one side hex, same weight and length as a slug) and one side has a fillister screw. I think my 'hybrid' is very close to this pickup but I have to play and hear this set, though. Not that I will, because I'm saving up credits for a phat staple set and a set of charlie christians ;)

Re: Black Winter

there is also the Dokken humbucker and El Diablo and AH Metal Fatigue and RTM, if you want to get into the CS models that could qualify as passive 'metal' models. and is the 'Trembucker Distortion' a reference to the PATB-2 Parallel Axis Distortion?

Yeah, I was referencing the Parallel Axis Distortion.

I ran across a Merrow demo of the Custom Custom as well that I do not recall being in the original comparison video. I am glad that Duncan is integrating these demo videos into their product pages though. These comparisons are far more in depth than the older 30 second mp3 clips.

In that second video, I am thrown by the fact that it is a Black Winter and Nazgul comparison, but it does look like both are 7 string guitars.

Either way, I definitely dig the open sound of the Nazgul and the in-your-face mids of the Black Winter side by side.

Re: Black Winter

Then that is just awesome! I know I'll get a Black Winter set with the special SD logo on the black covers.

this look is killer

why they don't offer this covers as a strandard model ...

Someone in the youtube comments said there are 2 sets of 7 string black winters. one in kieth merrows possession and one at the SD shop. who knows if that's true. sounds reasonable. I suppose the custom shop would make a 7 string set for anyone who wanted them though.

Not saying it isnt true but I would be as quick to believe a youtube comment as I would be to believe red sharpie scrawl on the wall of a urinal.

Re: Black Winter

How do these differ from the DD.

My memory is fuzzy, is the DD 3-magnet or was that just the Invader?

Well, the Custom coils should all be the same. Were they not created by forum members a long time ago by swapping mags into the SH5? Then, they gained a lot of popularity and are now production models? What I would like to know about the JB, DD and Invader that you mentioned is what does the wind pattern look like? I have read/heard that certain Duncans have both symmetrical AND asymmetrical patterns. I wonder what the cross-section of the wind looks like, as I have seen pickups with coils sectioned like a trapeziod, an hourglass, a beehive, or just an even cylinder. Then, would an asymmetrical wind be a coil shape other than a "cylinder" or two equal DCR coils of different shapes. Duncan doesn't do the scatterwinding thing like a few other winders (not to my knowledge, at least), but still comes out with some radically different-toned pickups for having close DCR and magnet types. The PAF winds, for example all have close readings, but all are pretty different.

Re: Black Winter

Those eBay covers are black powder coat, not sure why they say Black Matte which is not yet available for 6-string.

Scott,

Do you know the story on the 7 string Black winter? Is that a sign of things to come? :eyecrazy: Or just a special set for kieth?

Thanks!

Re: Black Winter

Apparently there are no trembucker (b) & standard (n) spaced sets, so that's it for me. Damn shame, those were exactly what I was looking for otherwise. The BKP Painkiller doesn't seem THAT much different specwise..

There is a Trembucker bridge version. Were you not able to find one?

Hey Chris, I don't have any news on this. There was a Custom one built for Keith, but aside from that I haven't heard if it will go 7.

The store I went into (the importer) checked from a few sources that no sets composed of a TB & SH were available. They could order me a single trembucker, but the total cost would climb all the way to BKP territory plus wait time (1,5 months on the safe side).

That's weird. The TB and SH set is the same price here in the US (via Gearhounds).

Re: Black Winter

Anyway- I stopped in here to say that I'm ordering a set of Black Winters very soon, hopefully tomorrow.

I can't wait to start playing some black metal on the new guitar with Black Winters! :headbang:
