Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

this is hardly a fair and balanced test, but screw it im bored and its fun.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7081947

its just me playing a bunch of different clips going back and forth between the two guitars (with the different pickups).

LTD alexi-600 w/ blackout neck model in bridge position (alder body, maple neckthru, ebony board, 25.5")
edwards FV-140M w/ EMG 81 in bridge position (mahogany body, maple set neck, maple board, 24.75")

like i said, hardly an impartial test with the different guitars' features. whatever.
it goes laiho-edwards-laiho-edwards-laiho-edwards-laiho-edwards in case you couldnt tell

10 imaginary points to anyone who can identify the latter 2 songs.

whatd you kids think? i like the blackout better on the raw track, but through itunes with the "rock EQ" i like the 81 better.

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

The 81 has more sizzle but I prefer it's low end character and pick attack better. Have you tried it with the 18v mod? I love mine even more since doing it!

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

nah its just 9v. i bought a bag of battery clips though, so ill do it over xmas

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

haha, nearly a year later and someone finally gets it

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

i should do another of these. this was a year ago already, i could probably get a much nicer sounding comparison now

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

Would like to hear the pickups in a full mix situation.
I usually prefer that approach, since after all that's ultimately the true test of how it performs, since I assume .

BTW, what did you use to record this clip?
POD XT I'm guessing?
Which amp sims?

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

yeah PODxt. 5150 ("Criminal") model, treadplate cab, xt tubescreamer.

im getting far better sounds now out of the 5150/criminal but with cab impulses and an actual OD pedal (maxon od-9)

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

Yeah, I never liked the POD's Tube Screamer simulation that much either, just sounds kinda weird and wrong.
I hear a lot about using a real TS or Maxon into the POD, but never tried it personally.
These days I tend to just use my POD to track DI tracks, and reamp via POD Farm, so the real OD pedal thing wouldn't have any effect in that situation anyway.
I always seem to use Criminal for leads, but never really tried it for rhythms.

Another weird thing is that even when I download a whole bunch of great impulses, I could get them to sound great with other amp sims like SoloC and 8505, but with my POD Farm tones I use the Line 6 cab sims. I guess that makes me a weird guy, but I can never seem to get Line 6 amp sims+ impulses sound as good as using the Line 6 cabs.

Re: Blackout (neck-in-bridge) vs. EMG 81 comparison

what POD do you have?

i dunno that you can get a decent DI out of the XT, whenever i try it always has a lot of weird background noise.

i only just recently started using impulses with a cab-sim-less XT, and so far like it a lot better. still not pleased with the XT overall, though ill probably never be. need a real amp.

I've got the POD X3 Live.
The DI tracks aren't the best admittedly, so I was hoping to eventually get a better interface (and possibly DI box if I needed one too) and just use the POD as a dongle so I can keep using POD Farm.
I find that as long as you're not playing stuff with to many stops and maintain a good noise to signal ratio (turn up the faders fairly loud in the DAW software) the noise doesn't bother me, I just tend to edit out the bars just before and after the clip where I record, which is where the noticeable noise for me comes in.
