Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

There have been some threads asking how Blackouts and Mustaines compare. I threw together some stereotypical metal type riffs for those interested (and even used the Crazy 8s for the third take). Its three identical clips back to back in one file. I just changed guitars for each take.

1. Jackson DK1 - Blackouts
2. Jackson DK1 - Mustaines
3. Jackson mahogany Soloist - Crazy 8s

...and, as always, plenty of slop in the playing (just to keep it human :cool2:) - enjoy

If you guys want the MP3, just PM me and I'll e-mail it to you so you can listen to it on anything you want...I prefer the car after mxing on the monitors.

Those sound very close to me even using my px100's. Can't imagine someone being able to tell them apart with cheap headphones/speakers. Cool riffage btw.

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

Thanks. I thought it was fun to do, the tonal differences in those types of riffs is subtle. There is much more of a difference when you start to roll them back a bit - I usually don't play with that much gain. I have no idea what the clip on the site sounds like - I don't have sound on this server...or if the link even works?

I am guessing it is working?

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

The links workin for me, but with my KRK RP8's they all sound VERY similar. What else were you using on the clips?

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

They are actually very raw clips.

Guitars are straight into Mesa Road King IIv2, SM57 center speaker on Mesa Recto cab into a Roland VS-2400. Drums are just a little Alesis SR-16. Light mastering compression on the mix, but that is it. No EQs, effects, or any significant amount of compression.

The only differences in the clips are the pickups (except the Crazy 8s are in a mahogany neck-though) Amazing how little difference there can be....

the blackouts sound like...the other two sound more alike, the blackouts are more in-your-face sounding...maybe it's just more high end or something. The Crazy 8 doesn't sound as thick as the other two.

they really do sound a lot alike though...maybe make a clip without the drums?

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

Those really are close, but thanks to Binner for making my decision a lot easier. Really appreciate that clip, it was just what I was looking for! Thanks man!

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

Sorry to alarm you, guess its just me. think Ive figured out. My comp doessnt have active x. Had to run it.. DUH!!!

First, cool riffage!!! Hmm.. Not nearly as different as I was expecting. Even the crazy 8 is suprisingly close...
Best I can tell, is the Blackouts were just alil thicker sounding and the crazy was just slightly thinnest.

Since you have spent time with them, whats your overall feeling?

Thanks, I generally prefer passives, but the Blackouts and Mustaines are good enough for me to use far more often than other actives I have.

The Crazy 8 is my favorite pup so far, I love the bite in the upper mids and vocal midrange, and somewhat chewy low mids - very lively and fun pup. They seem to have some qualities that remind me of the single coils in my strat, especially in the neck, yet are hot humbuckers through and through.

The Blackouts are as advertised and excel at it. I think I like the Mustaines more than Blackouts for lead work and anything using less gain. They really sound mighty fine. The Blackouts are a little more raw with a harsher mid range, which really shines with riffs with like this.

You can really "feel" the difference between them more than hear it. For feel, while doing these riffs, I would rate them inthe following order:

1. Crazy 8s first, tight, punchy, "sticky" feeling
2. Blackouts, for the slightly brighter edge and less low end, it felt a little more puctual.
3. Mustaines, I would prefer to turn up the highs (but not the presence) just a hair and reduce the low end on the amp when using these for riffs of this nature

...maybe make a clip without the drums?

Guitar tracks always sound like poo to me when there is nothing else to balance your ears, but it is an "...And Justice for All" mix (no bass). I think that drums are a minimum to hear how they sound in the band context that they would be operating in.

I love the Crazy 8 too! Great for leads. I run one in my Charvel 4 and havnt decided where to put my other one yet.

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

I really liked 8s waaay better, that' probably because they are not active right, they way more natural and complex, the other two .... like said many times the only time when I like actives is when its Zakk.

Re: Blackouts - Mustaines - Crazy 8 Clips

Thanx for the clips Scot!
I think there is too much gain to really "understand" the differences!I wold like to hear them with a tad less gain ,and a flat EQ on roadking!
But that#s a great clip and a good reference point for actives!
It surprised me how close thos actives are!

The high gain channel is set for where I use it with my C5s and other passives, the actives push it over the edge a bit...

I think you like the midrange, but the Mustaines growl and grind more than the Blackouts.
