Blog: How To Become a Knob Twiddler

Re: Blog: How To Become a Knob Twiddler

I recently started to use my tone knob. I always used the volume but I would sometimes find that their would still be a lil too much treble so I rolled the tone knob back with the volume up a tad and it fixed the problem been using em both to get usable tones and sounds. Other thing that I do which I know a lot of old school guys do it too is put the volume knob at like around 6 or 7 with the amp already cranked then turn it up from the guitar to get a boost or roll back for some chimey cleans. I had a guy he was a guitar player who now plays bass tell me yesterday after the gig was over how do you get all your tones with out pedals I told him I use the amps foot switch for dirt and verb thats built in and switch between PUPs and Roll up an down on my Vol and tone depending on the parts of the song. Plus cranking up the amp but keeping your guitars vol down a lil will also let you compensate if the rest of the band gets to loud you can turn up to keep up.

I became a knob fiddler by playing guitars with one knob. A volume knob can do A LOT.

Yeah, same here. I also started messing around with tone knobs once I got my HM also. The tone knobs have this weird notch at the 5 position so if I do a clean part while using the neck I'll sometimes use the tone knob to knock down the treble a bit.

I became a knob twiddler when I started playing stuff other than metal all the time.

One weird night when I was trashed, I mean completely GONE, I remember effing around with the knobs and really making some ground.

Ever since then I've ALWAYS messed with em.

I'm always touching the knobs making slight adjustments... it really helps your clean tones as well. A lot of bands live seem to have harsh clean tones but you'd be surprised how much rolling off the volume to 7 or 8 and the tone to 5 or 6 can help that.

One mod I have to ALL my guitars is the treble bleed mod on the volume pot, I am one of those guys that use the volume to control the gain level. However I rarely, if ever, use the tone knob, I am mostly uninterested to changing the EQ on the fly. I have two channels that have individual EQ settings and I like to leave them there.
