Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

It was a funny reading. I could identify myself with 'that' guy.

well done. :fing2:

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

These blog posts have been something else... this one in particular. It's great to see stuff like this that focuses on the classic problem of application, the mental game of playing guitar, things like that.

This article needs to be published in a magazine.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Absolutely. I'm not in that phase with anything in particular at the moment, but it also applies to stuff you haven't played in forever. I decided to sell my Greco, was careful not to play it, listed it, then had a beer and played it. It's warm and round and loud-unplugged.

I pulled the listing. Since then, it's not been out of the case. I guess I'll see it again when I decide to sell it in a few years...then back out of it.

Nice article soso. Even though I own one of those honeymoon guitars in the pics :chairfall

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

This is part of what keeps me from buying a "real" amp. How do you know how things will be past the honeymoon stage? Is there any way to reliably determine if you'll like an amp (or a guitar) later on?

In possibly related news, I've also never been married. But I do own 7 guitars now.

Ah yes, the HWY-1 Tele, right?

THAT one didn't suck. At all. It was just redundant to my AVRI.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Great article. The honeymoon phase is why we won't accept reviews on the website I own (hockey equipment, not music) for the first 30 days of ownership. Reviews in the first couple days tend to be more about validating your purchase than impartial assessment.

Adam, you are killing it with these recent articles. I'm glad you joined the blog crew.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

As always, an enjoyable read. Good work sir. I have been that guy myself...

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Carpenters have attachments to their tools.....big time.
I speak from experience. Lost my hammer in the water/mud in '06. Had it since '87. I was devastated! The replacement, though the same model, just isn't the same.
Yep, it's a sickness.

Lots of these new blog entries have been 1000x better than anything I've read from Guitar World recently.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Good stuff!

I'm all too familiar with amp churn. There was a really bad stretch where in a two year period, my #1 amp was a
  1. Soldano Decatone
  2. Peters 3CP1
  3. Rivera Rake
  4. Fuchs ODS
  5. Two Rock Emerald 50
I'm pretty good about holding on to guitars but there was a five year period where I just went through a slew of amps. Good thing for me is that over the past 3 years or so, I've been pretty stable in my rig and that's allowed me to get much more familiar with the gear I own . . . as opposed to the gear I want. :)

Even so, there's not a single component of my current #1 signal chain that's the same as what I used five years ago. Everything's changed, from picks to strings to guitars to cables to amps to speakers. Pretty wild when I think about it.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

From my observation anything with scooped mids causes a lot more honeymoon syndrone than other gear.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Cool to see that it was soso who did that! Nice article.

Re: Blog: New Amp and the "Honeymoon Phase"

Good stuff. I like to think I learned a long time ago that jonesing doesn't have to result in a purchase. I love to talk about gear, play with it, and learn about it, but my wallet doesn't come out until I'm pretty darn sure I'll keep it for the long haul.

A few recent mistakes were the EJ Fuzz and Fryette SAS Dist pedal. But I also never made a NPD honeymoon thread about them either.
