I wouldn't say that post is accurate to getting a 3D finish. The most important thing is good wood. I have a natural unstained EBMM Axis that has the most 3D top I've ever seen on a guitar, and a PRS made of Korina that appears flamed. Though staining enhances the grain, I haven't found it to enhance the 3D effect. Some guitar companies, notably imports, will stain the top a darker color, sand it off, stain a lighter color to get a 3D effect. Most of the ones I see tend to bring out the grain of the wood, but not the 3D figuring
