Blue Angel review

I finally got to put the Boogie through the ringer Saturday night at a gig and all I can say is.............. wow!

We were playing in a smaller place, so I used the amp with the 4 ohm out and the 2 6v6's selected.

The best way to describe the tone of this amp is warm, even and responsive.
I had the tone controls set fairly neutral...

volume at 11 0'clock
treble at 1 o'clock
mids at 10;30
bass at 12 o'clock
reverb on just enough to let it be a little wet.

The amp breaks up a lot later than say a vintage Deluxe...I had it set to where it would just start to growl a little if I hit it hard. When clean the highs are very fat, the mids are present and the lows were distinct and it didn't fart out...even with the alnico 10's.

This amp doesn't suffer the buzziness of the other dual recs...hell, it don't sound like any Boogie I have ever played through...much sweeter tone....vintage Fenders are the only other amp that really compares to what this amp sounds like.

A couple of cool features..the mid control acts like a gain control when you go past 12 o'clock...adds gain and makes the amp a little darker sounding.

The reverb is absolutely killer! I haven't used verb much over the past few years, because of the lackluster reverbs on the amps I have had of late.
The reverb sounds better than the reverb my old pre CBS Deluxe and that is saying a lot!

There is one other small thing that blew my mind...my guitar was perfectly balanced in all five pick up positions...they all sounded spectacular.

The one thing that threw me about the amp was the way it takes OD pedals...it liked my Blues Pro and my OCD....but backwards from what my other amps have.....The Blues Pro really shined at low to medium gain and the OCD was used for more saturated stuff. I will have to try a Crunch Box through it.....I have a feeling that it would suit this amp with its pronounced upper mids and give me a psuedo Marshall tone.

If I had to compare this amps tone with another, I would say it is a cross between a tweed Fender and a blackface Fender....it is smooth with a complex midrange, yet it can sound aggressive.

Is the amp a keeper?...you bet! I told my wife to punch me square in the face if I ever even suggest trading it....it is that good.

I am going to play a big place this weekend and run it with the el84s.......

Stay tuned.

Re: Blue Angel review

I know I said this before in your post when you bought it. The Blue Angel is the "ONLY" Boogie I would own. Great review. Enjoy!

Re: Blue Angel review

Oh boy, I'm a fan of el84 tubes (reason why I got the 25w model of the express), so I cant wait to see what you think about the BA when running with those.

Thanks for the review dude. When you describe the sound, I know exactly what you mean, as I have heard one of those amps before, and they sound beautiful.

Congrats again, and thank you for reviewing.

Re: Blue Angel review

Those are nice amps and well priced in the used market.

Heck, Kevin Eubanks has made a good TV career using a Blue Angel and a Rat pedal.

Re: Blue Angel review

This post makes me kick myself for not buying a nice MESA when I worked there.

Excellent review!

Re: Blue Angel review

Wow, at 11, its really loud! I usually have mine around 9 or 10, and it is screaming with a bad monkey or TS7 pedal. I usually use the 6v6s, 4ohm speaker with the fat switch on. My TMB settings are like yours, but I usually have the mids a little lower- the mids can get really tubby if set too high. I will say, between the volume set at 9 & 12 o'clock is this amp's sweet spot. Any louder, it does that flubby deluxe thing. Too many mids for the speakers to handle. Certainly my favorite amp, and the best Dual Rect of the bunch.

My drummer is a gorilla! I would be happier at about 10:00 on the volume.

Re: Blue Angel review

Great to hear you're digging it! -I have the head version, Blue/tan as well. It's been a great amp for me, versatile and bulletproof -mine took a four foot fall onto a wooden floor and continued to work as if nothing happened.

So yours is a 2x10? -that's a cool setup. I did a tour where I used my BA head into the two alnico 10s of my old Vibrolux. It was a very cool sound.

If you have a good quality 2x12 lying around I suggest you fit it with a G12H30 and a Blue and try the BA with that. I've used mine with a 65amps 2x12 and the clean tone was stunning.

Been saying that for a long time myself ! :beerchug:

Glad ya' love it Bill. And a 2x10 is way lighter than the 4x10 I used to have ;)

I really dug the combined tube setting....6V6s & EL84s meld nicely when OD'd.

ENJOY !!!!!!!! :D
